Recently, actress Halle Berry, 46, officially revealed her pregnancy with her and fiance? Olivier Martinez? first child. This will be her second in addition to five-year-old, Nahla with ex-boyfriend Gabriel Aubry. While many stand in awe of Berry?s figure, others pose questions on the risks involved with her pregnancy.
Berry expressed in a previous interview that this pregnancy was ?the biggest surprise of [her] life? and that she thought she had past this point in her life. To add, she admitted to taking off about four years from work as a first-time mom with Nahla, but stated that ?with another baby on the way, Mama cannot take time off.? However, it?s her age and existent diabetes that have medical experts concerned.
Physician and chief of Maternal Fetal Medicine at Winthrop University Hospital in Mineola, N.Y., Martin Chavez, points out that a child born to an older mother has increased risks for chromosomal changes that can cause Down Syndrome and heart abnormalties. Her diabetes also carries risk to the size and health of the child.
?We?re assuming with Halle Berry that she?ll have top medical care and good nutrition,? says associate professor of family medicine at the Georgetown University School of Medicine, Ranit Mishori. ?In that case everything could be fine for her and her baby.? He adds, ?Older moms are also at higher risk for developing high blood pressure and diabetes, but it sounds like she?s doing a good job monitoring her diabetes.?
Despite the risks, Berry confirmed that the baby is healthy.
