Cops bark like dogs, trick burglary suspects into surrendering

Some cops in Connecticut are more bark than bite. But their animal instincts were exactly what was called for in order to bring down a pair of suspected criminals.

WFSB reports on a pair of masked burglary suspects who had holed up inside a home in Connecticut and were refusing to cooperate with authorities. So, the cops decided the next logical move was issuing a threat to release dogs from their K-9 unit.

However, there was just one problem: None of the dogs were actually on the scene or available to be dispatched in the effort.

So, the New Have Police Department made due with their resources on hand; enlisting several of the dozen officers on site who barked like dogs in an effort to convince the two suspects that a pack of vicious dogs were chomping at the bit, just waiting to be unleashed.

And, in a surprising development, it actually worked. After the men heard the cops barking, they emerged from the home and surrendered to police.

Needless to say, McGruff the Crime Dog would be proud.

?These cops were trained to do stuff like that, right?? said an impressed sounding local resident, Gideon Gurley after witnessing the incident. "I guess that was the best technique to do what they needed to do to get people out."

The suspects, Kwame Wells-Jordan, 20, and Norman Boone, 23, have been charged with car theft and burglary with additional charges expected to be forthcoming.

3 of 4 reptiles stolen from Calif. museum found

FRESNO, Calif. (AP) ? A Central California science museum has recovered three of four reptiles stolen in a burglary caught on surveillance video, and arrested a suspect in the heist.

The Discovery Center's education coordinator Ian Goudelock says a 3 1/2-foot savannah monitor lizard, red-tailed boa constrictor and a ball python are back at the Fresno museum on Friday. A 3-foot-long ball python remains missing.

The suspect broke into the museum on Wednesday night or Thursday morning, smashed the tanks that held the four reptiles and made off with them in a garbage bag. The suspect also went into the center's gift shop and stole children's toys, the phone system and the security monitor.

Fresno police says they made an arrest on suspicion of the burglary, but the suspect's name was not immediately available.

MIT Files Court Papers ?Partially? Opposing Release Of Documents About Aaron Swartz Investigation

250px-Aaron_Swartz_profileThe Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) is “partially” opposing a request by the estate of Aaron Swartz for the release of documents related to the investigation that led to Swartz’s arrest and prosecution in federal court. In court papers filed today, MIT counsel states that its opposition stems from two factors: its concerns about people in the MIT community named in the documents and the security of its computer networks. MIT has previously stated that it would release the documents with redactions of names and other information. MIT President L. Rafael Reif said in email to the MIT community earlier this month: On Friday, the lawyers for Aaron Swartz?s estate filed a legal request with the Boston federal court where the Swartz case would have gone to trial. They demanded that the court release to the public information related to the case, including many MIT documents. Some of these documents contain information about vulnerabilities in MIT?s network. Some contain the names of individual MIT employees involved. In fact, the lawyers? request argues that those names cannot be excluded (?redacted?) from the documents and urges that they be released in the public domain and delivered to Congress. The paper filed today reiterates this position, basing it on threats already made to MIT staff and three separate hacking incidents at the university. The information includes “email, the names, job titles, departments, telephone numbers, email addresses, business addresses, and other identifying information of many members of the MIT community.” Swartz has become a symbol in the Internet community since his suicide. His supporters have led the debate about the role MIT played in Swartz’s prosecution and the vigilance of the U.S. Attorney General in the case. MIT claims it is fully cooperating in the investigation that has come since Swartz’s suicide.

Cell reprogramming during liver regeneration

Friday, March 29, 2013

During embryonic development, animals generate many different types of cells, each with a distinct function and identity.

"Although the identities of these cells remain stable under normal conditions, some cells can be persuaded to take on new identities, through reprogramming," says Ben Stanger, MD, PhD, assistant professor of Medicine in the Division of Gastroenterology at the Perelman School of Medicine, University of Pennsylvania.

Researchers have been able to reprogram cells experimentally, but few have shown that cells can change their identities under normal physiological conditions in the body, particularly in mammals.

In the cover article of this month's issue of Genes and Development, Stanger, PhD candidate Kilangsungla Yanger, Yiwei Zong, PhD, and their colleagues, did just that in the liver of a mouse. Stanger is also an investigator in the Abramson Family Cancer Research Institute and the Department of Cell and Developmental Biology.

The adult liver contains two major cell types ? hepatocytes and biliary cells ? that differ dramatically in appearance and function. Hepatocytes are the main cell type in the liver, where they synthesize proteins and other macromolecules, and detoxify toxic substances. Biliary cells, on the other hand, line the bile ducts, which carry bile from the liver to the small intestine to help digest fats.

Using a sensitive method to tag and track how cells develop and differentiate, the researchers found that conditional expression of an activated Notch1 gene converted hepatocytes into biliary cells. Notch is an important receptor for relaying signals to tell cells how to develop.

What's more, after the researchers injured liver cells with a variety of toxins to stimulate wound healing, they found that over two to three weeks hepatocytes activated a biliary cell program on their own, acquiring the shape and function of biliary cells. These changes were dependent on the activation of endogenous Notch signaling.

"This is direct evidence that cells can be converted from one mature cell type to another in a live animal, as part of a normal response to injury," says Stanger. "We think that augmenting pre-existing cell reprogramming relationships may be another way to engineer cells for the treatment of diseases in which there are not enough bile ducts, such as cholestasis."

Nextdoor Hits 10K Neighborhoods, Gets Me To Stop Running At Night

lost catAfter I had been running at night for more than a decade, a relatively under-the-radar service called Nextdoor got me to start running during the day. Almost nobody likes to exercise, and for many, overcoming the motivational hump of putting on your shoes and gym clothes can be trying on even the best of days. One evening late in January I had finally overcome this initial barrier to entry, and was just about to stop blogging to do my usual 30-minute nightly sprint when I got the email. “Woman robbed at gunpoint in Dogpatch, San Francisco” the subject line screamed. Unlike many of the emails I constantly receive, this was highly relevant to me, especially because, upon further inspection, the robbery had happened one block from my house. Until this email, I hadn’t given too much thought to Nextdoor, a service that I signed up for at the Allen & Co conference last summer, where co-founder Nirav Tolia?had given a talk about the local social network. The company started out as Fanbase in 2009, and was an attempt to create a user-generated content version of ESPN. Founders Tolia and Sarah Leary decided to pivot around May of 2010, and spent the next four to five months testing out different ideas. Fanbase officially pivoted to Nextdoor in September of 2010, starting out its pilot in Lorelei, a neighborhood in Menlo Park. Now a Facebook for your neighborhood, about half the Fanbase funding ended up carrying over, and Tolia and Leary ended up raising an additional $40.2 million for the new Nextdoor product. Initially enthusiastic, I had also invited my neighbors to use the platform, which had resulted in a de facto neighborhood support group (including the services of a pet psychic) when their adventurous cat Kiki went missing. I wrote a post about it for TechCrunch and then sort of forgot about it, rarely logging on to peruse the listings of free stuff and garage sales. Well I was certainly giving the service some thought now: “What if I had been that woman who was robbed?”"What if I had ventured out of my house just 15 minutes earlier?” I was still in my gym clothes, after so much effort, and feeling antsy from my day of work. Worse, I was now worried about a random stranger I had only heard about through the Internet, and I still needed a run badly.

Central African Republic leader, facing isolation, says no reprisals

By Ange Aboa

BANGUI (Reuters) - Central African Republic's new leader Michel Djotodia, facing international isolation after seizing power, said on Saturday he would not take reprisals against rivals and called on those who fled abroad to return.

The United States said on Saturday it did not recognize Djotodia, who toppled President Francois Bozize on March 24 after leading thousands of his Seleka rebels into the mineral-rich nation's capital Bangui, triggering days of looting.

"I make a patriotic and brotherly appeal for our countrymen, who have chosen the path of exile, to return," the former civil servant turned self-declared president told several thousand cheering supporters near the presidential palace.

"There will be no witch hunt, because we must establish tolerance, dialogue and forgiveness," he said.

Though violence in the riverside capital has ebbed, Djotodia said looters would face justice and called for international help, particularly from former colonial master France.

But the takeover has been condemned internationally. The African Union suspended Central African Republic and imposed sanctions on Seleka leaders, including Djotodia, this week.

France and the United States say the rebels should adhere to a power-sharing deal signed in Gabon's capital Libreville in January that mapped out a transition to elections in 2016 in which Bozize was forbidden from running.

Djotodia has pledged to act in the spirit of the agreement and said on Friday he would step down in 2016. But Washington on Saturday said Nicolas Tiangaye, named prime minister under the Libreville agreement, was now the only legal head of government.

"We strongly condemn the illegitimate seizure of power by force by the Seleka rebel alliance, Michel Djotodia's self-appointment as president, and his suspension of the constitution and National Assembly," read a statement from State Department spokesperson Victoria Nuland.

Bozize seized power in a 2003 coup but his failure to keep promises of power sharing after winning disputed 2011 polls led to the offensive by five rebel groups known as Seleka, which means "alliance" in the Sango language.

EMERGENCY SUMMIT

A grouping of eight political opposition parties, including the one headed by Prime Minister Tiangaye, said on Saturday it rejected Djotodia's proposed three-year transition period and called for new talks to revise the Libreville agreement.

"After consulting among ourselves, we think that 18 months of transition would be reasonable in order to organize new democratic elections," the coalition's spokesman Edouard Koyambounou told Reuters.

Chadian President Idriss Deby, chair of the 10-nation Economic Community of Central African States, will host a summit in N'Djamena on April 3 to discuss the crisis.

South African President Jacob Zuma has been invited and will attend the meeting, spokesman Mac Maharaj said on Saturday.

The opposition in South Africa and analysts have asked why a South African military training mission suffered 13 deaths in Central African Republic last weekend as its members fought alongside government troops against rebels.

South African media suggested the soldiers were defending mining interests in a country rich in diamonds, uranium and oil, but Pretoria officials denied this. They say 400 troops were present due to a 2007 bilateral defense accord with Bozize.

On Friday, Djotodia, responding to questions about resource licenses awarded to Chinese and South African firms by Bozize, said he would review resource deals signed by the previous government.

You Need a Budget's Mobile Apps Are Now Free

You Need a Budget's Mobile Apps Are Now FreeAndroid/iOS: If you happened to snag You Need a Budget's desktop app last week on sale, you might have been disappointed to find the popular finance tool's mobile apps were still $4.99. Thankfully, they're both now free.

You Need a Budget is one of your favorite personal finance tools, but it's always been a bit strange that it requires you to pay for both the desktop app and the mobile app even though the mobile apps won't work without the desktop version. You won't have to worry about that anymore as both the iOS and Android versions are free from here on out.

TCL LE46FHDE5300

  • Pros

Very affordable. Good image detail. Energy efficient.

  • Cons Oversaturated reds and greens. Sluggish remote. Only two HDMI ports.
  • Bottom Line

With the TCL LEFHDE5300 series you get capable LED-backlit HDTVs at affordable prices?the 46-inch model we tested rings up for less than $550. Features are scarce and color accuracy could be better, but this set is still a good deal for the money.

By John R. Delaney

Cash-strapped consumers take note: Chinese HDTV manufacturer TCL has reset the bar for budget-priced HDTVs. We recently reviewed the company's LE40FHDE3000 model and gave it props for its overall bang for the buck, as the least-expensive 40-inch HDTV we?ve ever tested. If you want a slightly bigger screen, though, TCL's LEFHDE5300 series is a better choice. This line has 42- and 46-inch versions, and the 46-inch version we tested, the LE46FHDE5300, is notable for its $549 (list) price, especially considering you might be able to find it for much less if you shop around. It's not without issues, though, color accuracy is a bit off, and the remote was slightly slow to respond in our tests. And like most budget HDTVs, there aren?t many features to be had here. On the plus side, 1080p image detail is sharp and the set doesn?t require a lot of power. If you're on a strict budget, TCL is worth checking out.

Design and Features
The LE46FHDE5300 may be inexpensive, but it doesn?t look cheap. The 46-inch panel is framed by very thin (0.5-inch) matte black bezels on the top and sides, with a slightly wider (0.8-inch) bezel on the bottom. The only adornments are a shiny TCL logo in the center of the bottom bezel and a silver Power button off to the right.

At first glance the set looks extremely thin, measuring just 0.6 inches at its thinnest point. However, it juts out to 2.2 inches at the bottom where the down-firing speakers are embedded. The 25-pound cabinet is supported by a heavy, rectangular glass base that is sturdy but doesn?t provide any swivel. There are four VESA-compliant mounting holes on the back for hanging the TV on a wall using an optional mounting kit.

The right side of the cabinet is home to three rocker buttons (Channel Up/Down, Volume Up/Down, Menu/Input). Around back, facing left, are two HDMI ports, a USB port, and a headphone jack. Downward-facing ports include composite and component A/V ports, PC audio input, VGA video input, digital audio output, and an antenna/cable jack. As with the TCL LE40FHDE3000, and our budget Editors' Choice, the RCA LED42C45RQ, this model only has two HDMI ports and lacks any network port, Wi-Fi, or Web apps.

The set uses the same remote that ships with the LE40FHDE3000. It?s 8 inches long, with a glossy black finish and 37 non-backlit buttons. There are no color-coded keys, but it does have playback controls and a dedicated picture preset button. I noticed a lag in response time when using the remote to change picture settings and while navigating through the settings menus, an issue I did not experience with the LE40FHDE3000.

There are six picture presets: Natural, Sports, Cinematic, Vibrant, ECO, and Personal. Basic settings include Brightness, Contrast, and Sharpness. Expert settings allow you to adjust Backlight, Color, Tint, and Color Temperature. The Advanced settings menu offers an SABC (Screen Adaptive Brightness Control) option that, when enabled, changes the brightness level depending on the content being displayed. There?s also a Dynamic Backlight option that changes the backlighting level depending on screen content, and three noise reduction settings.

Performance
Using images from the DisplayMate HDTV diagnostic utility, a Klein K10-A Colorimeter, and SpectraCal?s CalMan 5 software, I performed a basic darkroom calibration on the LE46FHDE5300 and then measured luminance levels and color accuracy. The set produced a peak brightness of 255.73 cd/m2 and a black level reading of 0.079 cd/m2. The resulting contrast ratio of 3,237:1 is nothing to write home about, although it is higher than what we got from other low-cost sets including the Insignia NS-42E480A13, the Westinghouse UW40T2BW, and the RCA LED42C45RQ.

Color accuracy is sketchy, as you can see from the CIE chromaticity chart below. The closer the red, green, and blue dots are to their corresponding boxes, the better the color accuracy. (Ideally each dot will be inside the box.)? In this case, blues were very close to ideal, but reds and greens land well outside the box. As a result, the LE46FHDE5300?s picture is a little hot, or oversaturated. This was obvious while watching the movie Piranha on Blu-ray; flesh tones looked a bit too red, and Elisabeth Shue?s blond hair had a very slight green cast to it. That said, color accuracy issues are not uncommon with HDTVs in this price range, and are part of the reason you?ll pay a lot more for a same-size set like the Sony Bravia KDL-46HX850, which has extremely accurate colors.

Otherwise, the LE46FHDE5300 offers sharp image detail and moderately good viewing angles. There is some loss of luminance at around 45 degrees off center that gives the picture a slightly washed out look, but colors remain intact.

The LE46FHDE5300 is a relatively energy efficient budget HDTV, requiring 53 watts of power during testing, which is exactly what the much smaller (40-inch) Westinghouse UW40T2BW used, and only slightly more than the same-size Sony KDL-46HX850 (47 watts). The Insignia and RCA models used 64 watts and 67 watts, respectively, and both have smaller screens than the LE46FHDE5300.

Conclusion
If you?re in the market for a simple, inexpensive, larger-than-40-inch HDTV, the TCL FHDE5300 series has you covered. It delivers a bright picture and sharp image detail, has relatively wide viewing angles, and is energy efficient. While its color accuracy is not optimal, it offers a better all-around picture than comparably priced sets like the Insignia NS-42E480A13 and the Westinghouse UW40T2BW. That said, it still can?t match the overall picture quality of our reigning Editors? Choice for budget HDTVs, the 42-inch RCA LED42C45RQ.

Cash-strapped consumers take note: Chinese HDTV manufacturer TCL (The Creative Life) has reset the bar for budget-priced HDTVs. We recently reviewed their LE40FHDE3000 model and gave it props for its overall bang for the buck, and for being the cheapest 40-inch HDTV we?ve seen here at the PCMag.com Labs.? However, if a 40-inch screen just won?t cut it, consider 46-inch version of the company's LEFHDE5300 series, the LE46FHDE5300. This $549 (list) 1080p LED-backlit HDTV offers significantly more viewing area than its smaller sibling, and it?s a relative steal at just under $550 (or less if you shop around). However, it is not without issues; color accuracy is off and the remote is slow to respond. Like most budget HDTVs, there aren?t many features on this model, either. ?On the plus side, image detail is sharp and the set doesn?t require a lot of power. The 42-inch version, the LE42FHDE5300, is available for even less, and while we haven't tested that specific model, our tests based on the LE46FHDE5300 give a good sense of how it will perform. ? Chew on this: Sexiest stars eat what you eat

By Kurt Schlosser, TODAY

If you ever wanted six-pack abs on your way to being named the Sexiest Man Alive, or if you crave the toned legs and flat belly of an international pop superstar, a trip to your nearest fast-food establishment may be in order.

Startraks, FameFlynet

Ryan Reynolds, left, gets his Burger King on during a break from filming in New York this week. Britney Spears grabs KFC to go in Thousand Oaks, Calif., on March 19.

If that doesn't make sense, then neither does Ryan Reynolds walking down the street with Burger King to go, or Britney Spears hauling a bag of KFC across a parking lot. We know stars are supposed to be "just like us," but have you seen us? We don't look like them.

Let's just assume that Reynolds and Spears ate whatever was in those bags. Instead of collapsing into a cheeseburger coma in front of "South Park," it's safe to say these two burned it off. Probably before the bags hit the trash. (In Reynolds' case, the task may have been a little easier. A publicist tied to the actor called Friday to say that's just a turkey burger and unsweetened iced tea!)

Albert Michael / startraksphoto.com

No Coke. Pepsi. Actress Denise Richards at Arby's.

Celebs with six-packs under their shirts and not in their shopping carts get that way thanks to a strict diet-and-exercise routine. And there's a good chance that both of those disciplines are maintained under the watchful eye of well-paid personal chefs and trainers. It also doesn't hurt to go the "kale and dust" route if fitting into a catsuit is in your job description.

So those of you envisioning looking like any of these people because you eat at the same drive-thru, take note. Joy Bauer, nutrition and health expert for TODAY, says "limit fast food outings to once per week, and alternate fattening fare with healthier offerings like grilled chicken salads, turkey burgers, and snack wraps."

If the thought of a snack wrap taking the place of your bacon-double sounds unappetizing, Bauer crunches some numbers for you.

She says to pay penance for a Burger King Whopper (630 calories), large fries (500 calories), and?40-ounce soda (380 calories) -- totaling 1,510 calories -- you would have to:

  • run for 2 hours straight, or
  • swim for 4 hours, or
  • bike for 2 hours, or
  • play full-court basketball for 2 hours

INFphoto.com

Rihanna hits the drive thru at a fast food joint in her native Barbados.

If you scarf down KFC's Original Recipe chicken-thigh value box (540 calories), a side of mashed potatoes with gravy (120 calories), and?30-ounce sweetened iced tea (260 calories) -- totaling 920 calories -- you'd need to:?

  • spin for one hour and 10 minutes, or
  • walk for 3 hours, or
  • hit the dance floor and boogie down for an hour and a half, or
  • do yoga for 5 hours straight!

"Celebs have cravings just like everyone else ... and when they succumb to fast food faves -- just like us mortals -- they must work hard to burn off the calorific splurges," Bauer says.

Maybe you're burning calories right now at the thought of Ryan Reynolds burning calories to work off his meal. Maybe the thought of his wife, Blake Lively, in a swimsuit is enough to motivate him to stay in shape. We know she'd never eat ... aw, forget it!

Who's making a food run?

There has been a wave of skepticism about the severity of this month's "biggest ever" denial-of-service attack ? that a fight between website hosts and spam fighters may or may not have?sunk the DNS servers that run the entire Internet?? and, well, it's OK to be a little scared of the enormity of this thing. Just not that scared.

The New York Times's source compared the DDoS attacks to "nuclear bombs," while?the BBC?quoted the head of the spam company, Spamhaus, as claiming that their attacks would be strong enough to bring down a major government's Internet infrastructure "instantly."?

Gizmodo?and?Venture Beat?both countered with no-big-deal posts, with Gizmodo's Sam Biddle going so far as to call the "Internet War Apocalypse" a "lie."?Not everyone agrees. So, if even the tech nerds are fighting over the fight that maybe slowed down the whole Internet, how should regular Internet users approach this thing? Like this:

Think Local, Not Global

The "nuclear bomb" analogy seems to have paint a picture that this DDoS attack leveled the entire web, and world-wide. That's not what happened. Parts of the Internet, however, did see some down time as a result of the attack.?The Verge's Russell Brandom pointed?to the following chart showing a dip at the London Internet Exchange, which is legally designated as "critical infrastructure":

Akamai's Real Time Global Web Monitor?also showed congestion Wednesday in The Netherlands, where this whole fight originated, and in the U.K, per this chart:

Akamai

Akamai's Real Time Global Web Monitor

A Sophos analyst also confirmed these European outages to?ZDNet. And, according to?Naked Security,?there were reports of 21.7 million?insecure/misconfigured DNS servers on the IPv4 yesterday. So, some people did see a slow down in their usage yesterday. Those people just don't live in America, where a lot of the scary media reports originated.

Be Scared in Theory, Not in Practice

That "biggest ever" 300gbps figure is a "massive amount of bandwidth to a single enterprise or service," as a spokesperson for NIT, a tier 1 Internet operator,?told Biddle. And it?is?the biggest ever, which?does?mean something ? these hacks are getting more serious, as this Arbor Network chart of previous DDoS attacks shows:

But the DNS servers that run much of the Internet?can?handle something like that. Even the LINX dip from above managed okay, as The Verge's Brandom explains: "The web is built on redundancy, so the extra terabyte-per-second of bandwidth could be spread across the network without any catastrophic failures."

Still, there is a reason for a little bit of alarmism: "The wake-up call for telecoms is real," Brandom writes. "There's never been a DDoS attack against an internet exchange before, and exchanges aren't set up to protect against them."?As we pointed out yesterday, there is also a reason these DDoS attacks are possible in the first place, and it comes in the form of a security hole, which has to do with Open DNS resolvers, as opposed to closed ones.?

Give in, Because There Is Nothing You Can Do

You might as well going on Internetting as usual, to be honest. For the hyper nervous users out there, though, this particular issue doesn't sound that hard to fix. CloudFare, the anti-DDoS firm Spamhaus enlisted to ward off the attack, suggests closing up these "openings." NakedSecurity's?Chester Wisniewski?reiterates this point: "If you are an administrator of DNS services, it is critical that you configure your recursive name servers to only reply to your own network."

Of course, the specific type of "reflection" DDoS attack is just?one of the many possible ways to take down the Internet. But the hyper-awareness for this "biggest ever" attack might encourage higher security standards in the future. Still: Relax.

No resurrection in stars for Batman's Robin - London Free Press

Poor Batman.

Not only are his parents dead, but now his son is dead, too.

As comic fans learned recently, Damian Wayne ? one of numerous youngsters to wear the costume of Robin, the Dark Knight?s crime-fighting sidekick ? has been killed off.

Writer Grant Morrison says he has no plans to bring the 10-year-old back to life, but it?s not like the writers who will work for DC in the future are bound by Morrison?s wishes.

In our world, death is an inevitable certainty. It?s unavoidable.

To superheroes, death has a more . . . elastic meaning. Rarely does a character stay dead.

Look at Marvel?s Captain America ? in 2007, his fellow Avengers were mourning Cap?s assassination. Yet today, the guy is fighting baddies like always. He didn?t lose a step after dying.

On the one hand, killing a major character opens up all kinds of interesting story-telling possibilities.

The Death of Captain Marvel was one of the first-ever graphic novels.

And when Jean Grey died back in the 1980s, the popular Uncanny X-Men title became a more poignant and deeper book.

On the other hand, a superhero death just serves to increase fan cynicism because rebirth is inevitable. Death rarely sticks.

That Stradivari violin is talking in Italian!

Radiological Society of America

The 1704 "Betts" Stradivari violin was crafted by Antonio Stradivari, an Italian manufacturer of string instruments. Of the estimated 1,000 violins originally crafted by Stradivari, about 650 still exist. New research suggests these instruments mimic the vowel sounds of the female soprano voice.

By Tia Ghose
LiveScience

Virtuosos who describe the singing voice of a violin may be on to something. The great violin makers, such as Stradivari and Guarneri, may have designed violins to mimic the human voice, new research suggests.

The research, described in the current issue of Savart Journal, found the violin produced several vowel sounds, including the Italian "i" and "e" sounds and several vowel sounds from French and English.

Study author Joseph Nagyvary, an emeritus biochemistry professor at Texas A&M University,?previously proved that the violin masters?Stradivari and Guarneri del Ges? had soaked their wood in brine and borax to fight a worm infestation that swept through Italy in the 1700s. Those chemicals treatments led to the unique sounds that violin makers have struggled to reproduce.

But he had also long argued that the great violin masters were making violins with more humanlike voices than any others of the time. [25 Amazing Facts from Science]

"It has been widely held that violins 'sing' with a female soprano voice," Nagyvary said in a statement.

To test that claim, Nagyvary recorded Metropolitan opera singer Emily Pulley singing a series of vowel sounds. He then compared those sounds with a 1987 recording of virtuoso Itzhak Perlman playing a scale on a 1743 Guarneri violin.

"I analyzed her sound samples by computer for harmonic content and then using state-of-the art phonetic analysis to obtain a 2-D map of the female soprano vowels. Each note of a musical scale on the violin underwent the same analysis, and the results were plotted and mapped against the soprano vowels," Nagyvary said in a statement.

The two "voices" could be mapped on the same scale, with the violin creating several English and French vowel sounds, as well as two Italian vowel sounds.

The findings suggest that makers of Guarneri and Stradivarius violins?of the 1700s were striving to imitate the human voice in their instruments. Guarneri violins now routinely sell for between $10 million and $20 million.

The new analysis could also provide a more objective way to rate violin quality.

"For 400 years, violin prices have been based almost exclusively on the reputation of the maker ? the label inside of the violin determined the price tag," Nagyvary said in a statement. "The sound quality rarely entered into price consideration, because it was deemed inaccessible. These findings could change how violins may be valued."

Sony reveals new details about PlayStation 4 controller

March 28 (Reuters) - Rory McIlroy, playing for the first time since losing his world number one ranking earlier this week, got off to a shaky start at the Houston Open on Thursday where he dropped three shots over his opening eight holes. The 23-year-old Northern Irishman, who was replaced atop the world rankings by Tiger Woods this week, struggled to find his rhythm on an ideal day for low scoring at the Redstone Golf Club in Humble, Texas. He bogeyed the par-four second hole and made a double-bogey seven on the eighth hole to limp to the turn at three-over. ...

Instagram ? The King of All Photo Apps! - Computer Tech Support

Living in the 21st century provides many different ways for people to both stay in touch with friends and family, as well as meet new and exciting people from all over the world. What started with message boards and email has branched out into a whole world of online interconnectedness.

With the increase in capabilities that current technology offers, contact has evolved from simple text communications to the allowance of more advanced types of expression. Many different software programs have been created, both free and paid, that allow us to spice up our communications in a myriad of different ways. Users can personalize messages with different colors, fonts and emoticons, all of which provide an outlet for creativity and a way for us to put a little of ourselves into the messages we send.

One of the most significant types of medium that has benefited from the increased transfer speeds of broadband is photos. Virtually every type of online social interaction has the capacity for users to exchange pictures with each other, in one way or another. This fact has taken things to a whole new level in terms of social networking. Now, not only can you share all of the information that you find important, but also the accompanying images that are equally as important. This trend has become so popular that one of the most exciting new social networking services is centered completely around the posting and sharing of images. I am, of course, referring to Instagram.

Introducing Instagram

Initially developed and released in 2010, Instagram has grown at a phenomenal pace to a current user base that tops 100 million. Instagram differs slightly from many of the other social networking platforms, such as Facebook and MySpace, in that it was introduced to run completely over mobile computing platforms, as opposed to being primarily internet based. While the capability for online profiles was introduced in 2012, Instagram remains primarily a tool for smartphone and tablet users.

Basic participation in Instagram?s services include the posting of photos to an account, after which they can be made available for viewing to user-defined persons or groups. Photos can also be shared across other social networking platforms by linking the Instagram account to the accounts held in the other services. Members can also elect to ?follow? another person?s account, allowing them to stay current on all of the content posted by that member instantly.

Images posted to Instagram can be manipulated through the use of one of the many filters that are offered. These filters apply different color enhancements to the posted image, allowing for an even greater degree of customization. With nearly 20 different available filters to use, the opportunity to show your content in the exact way you want it to appear is virtually limitless.

Acquiring an Account

Upon visiting Instagram?s homepage, located at www.instagram.com, you will be presented with the option to either download the app from the App Store (for iPhone users) or Google Play (for Android users). Once you have finished downloading, installing and opening the app on your mobile device, you will tap the Sign Up button to proceed.

Once the signup process has been completed you have several different destinations available to go to in order to customize your profile and begin posting content. These include a Profile tab, which allows you to view and update your Instagram account and a Camera tab, which allows you to take photos or upload images from your device?s internal storage.

Instagram has gone a long way towards offering a social networking solution for those whose primary method of computing and communication is done through a mobile device. In addition, their clear goal towards developing a service based primarily on images has been instrumental in reinforcing that old adage of a picture being worth a thousand words.

Boeing CEO urges FAA to return 787 to service, delays continue

By Alwyn Scott

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - - Boeing Co Chief Executive Jim McNerney on Thursday urged regulators reviewing battery problems on the company's grounded 787 passenger jet to let the plane back into service, saying he was confident the redesigned battery was safe.

He would not specify when he expected the jet to be flying customers again other than saying "sooner rather than later."

Separately, the airplane leasing company that is the world's biggest buyer of 787s said it expects its first delivery of the high-tech jet to be delayed to summer from spring, but that getting the plane restored to service will "go quickly."

The Federal Aviation Administration and its administrator Michael Huerta "have been champs here," McNerney told a U.S. Chamber of Commerce aviation summit in Washington, D.C. on Thursday. (For event video, click: http://link.reuters.com/juf96t )

"They have put us through our paces and they have America's best interests in mind. They have the safety of the public in mind as I hope we do, which I think at this point means let's get this thing back into service and get on with it."

Regulators worldwide banned flight of the 787 after lithium-ion batteries overheated on two of the aircraft in January. The grounding is costing Boeing an estimated $50 million a week in lost income and compensation payments to airlines.

McNerney said the grounding has been a "frustrating experience," but he had high confidence that the proposed fix for the battery system will work. Boeing is now running test flights to prove the safety of the system, which includes a steel box to prevent fire and contain explosion. McNerney said he expected the plane to be in service "sooner rather than later," though he was not more specific.

Shares of Boeing fell 0.5 percent to $85.76 in morning trading. The stock is up 16 percent since the plane was grounded, most of which came over the last month as the 787 moved closer to flying again.

Meanwhile, speaking in the sidelines of the conference, the president of Boeing's biggest 787 customer said he expects approving and installing a fix for the battery will "go quickly."

"I think it is going to go quickly now," said Fred Cromer, president of International Lease Finance Corporation, which has ordered 74 Boeing 787s. "The FAA is interested in getting the plane back in the air as soon as possible."

Boeing and the FAA have "a very good partnership," he said, and are working to make sure the fix "is a solution that all sides agree is the right thing to do."

AIG unit ILFC is due to receive its first five 787s this year. Cromer said there was no formal word from Boeing about when the first of the jets would be delivered, but that the schedule had shifted to summer from spring. The first jet is leased to Norwegian Air Shuttle , he said.

McNerney said recent corporate changes at Airbus parent EADS would make the European competitor a "stronger company."

"Airbus can figure out for themselves what they want to be, but I think the model does move a little closer towards -- I think the word (EADS chief executive) Tom (Enders) uses is -- a normal company. I know that has a special meaning in Germany, but I think that will create a stronger competitor, which I think is good for the industry."

EADS shareholders on Wednesday approved sweeping changes in control that the company says will prevent interference, despite coinciding with a rise in European state shareholdings triggered by Germany's decision to buy a stake from carmaker Daimler

Obama implores Congress to enact gun reforms

President Barack Obama addresses gun violence on March 28. (Yuri Gripas/Reuters)President Barack Obama spoke at the White House with rows of grieving mothers behind him and publicly implored Congress to pass gun-reform legislation 100 days after the Sandy Hook Elementary School mass shootings in Newtown, Conn.

"We've cried enough. We've known enough heartbreak. ... It's something that if we are serious, we will do," Obama said, Vice President Joe Biden at his side. "Now is the time to turn that heartbreak into something real."

As the mothers of children killed by gun violence wiped away tears, the president went on to urge the passage of background checks for gun buyers, and for loopholes to be closed for buyers who turn around and sell guns to criminals. He said 90 percent of Americans support background checks, as well as 80 percent of gun owners and 80 percent of Republicans.

Obama also suggested that too much time has passed since the shootings at Newtown. "Shame on us if we've forgotten. I haven't forgotten those kids. Shame on us if we've forgotten," the president said.

Later on Thursday, at the White Press briefing, Principal Deputy Press Secretary Josh Earnest addressed questions regarding timing and whether the president himself has acted swiftly enough on gun reform: "The president, I think, has been very forward-leaning in terms of the way he's engaged in this process."

Earnest also noted the 23 executive actions released by the White House in January and the more than 20 events and conversations with lawmakers, community leaders, survivors and gun-related groups the White House has undertaken in the days since Newtown.

But what many consider to be the most contentious proposed gun-reform legislation, an assault weapons ban, was absent from the president's remarks on Thursday.

Senate Democrats working on gun-reform legislation recently announced that they would drop an assault weapons ban from an overall package of reform measures and put it to a separate vote as an amendment. That action is designed to boost the chances a reform package will pass, as it's expected that the ban is too unpalatable for some members, especially Democrats in gun rights states and the multitude of Republican opponents.

The White House has been casting a positive spin on that decision, suggesting that offering the ban as an amendment still forces lawmakers to choose sides on the issue, even if it doesn't win passage.

"I can't stand here and guarantee that it?s going to pass," Earnest said at Wednesday's press briefing, "but it is a question that 100 senators are going to ask themselves when they wake up in the morning and look themselves in the mirror about whether or not they are going to?about which side they're going to be on when it comes to voting on a ban on military-style assault weapons." He added that the president will continue to advocate for the ban.

Democrats in Congress concede separating the ban from the overall package is the best way forward.

"We want to come out with the best, the boldest common denominator that we can get," House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi said at a news conference on Wednesday when asked about the decision to separate an assault weapons ban.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid has stated plans to introduce a gun-reform bill next month.

In addition to the president's talk, activities related to gun reform are taking place across the country on Thursday, a day gun-reform advocates have marked the "National Day to Demand Action" to end gun violence.

New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg?s anti-gun group, Mayors Against Illegal Guns, released two television ads on Thursday featuring family members of those killed in Newtown.

Court documents released on Thursday revealed, among other things, that police investigating the Sandy Hook massacre seized samurai swords, as well as a massive amount of ammunition and books on guns and mental health from the home of gunman Adam Lanza.

Slow Web Service? Group Claims 'Criminal Gangs' Issuing Largest ...

A London and Geneva-based anti-spam group is claiming that for the last week it has been sustaining an attack from a?Dutch Internet hosting company. The attack has been called the largest ?in the history of the Internet.?

BBC reported the spam-filtering non-profit Spamhaus added Cyberbunker, a company that hosts everything except child pornography and terrorism-related content, to is blocklist. Spamhaus now alleges that Cyberbunker with Russian ?criminal gangs? is issuing a consistent distributed denial of service (DDoS) attack. The attack was launched, Cyberbunker?s spokesman?Sven Olaf Kamphuis said, because Spamhaus was wrong in using its spam-blocking powers to police content on the Web.

?Nobody ever deputized Spamhaus to determine what goes and does not go on the Internet,? Kamphuis said, according to the New York Times. ?They worked themselves into that position by pretending to fight spam.?

The fight between the two goes back to 2011, when Spamhaus accused Cyberbunker of hosting spammers and requested its Internet Service Provider, A2B, take it down. A2B didn?t completely comply and Spamhaus listed A2B on its blacklist. A2B filed police reports in 2011 accusing Spamhaus of blackmail. Now the issue is coming to a head further since Cyberbunker was added to Spamhaus? blacklist in March 2013.

A DDoS attack is one where a large influx of traffic is sent to overload servers, denying service to actual visitors to the site. Attacks like this are frequently what those in the hactivist collective Anonymous have used to down websites temporarily in the past.

?If you imagine it as a motorway, attacks try and put enough traffic on there to clog up the on and off ramps,? BBC reported University of Surrey professor Alan Woodward saying as he described this type of attack. ?With this attack, there?s so much traffic it?s clogging up the motorway itself.?

Spamhaus Chief Executive?Steve Linford said the attack is directed at 80 Domain Name System servers and that it would be strong enough to take down a government?s Internet infrastructure, BBC reported. The New York Times explains further how the attack on DNS systems is more forceful, compared to a DDoS attack on just a website:

A typical denial-of-service attack tends to affect only a small number of networks. But in the case of a Domain Name System flood attack, data packets are aimed at the victim from servers all over the world. Such attacks cannot easily be stopped, experts say, because those servers cannot be shut off without halting the Internet.

?The No. 1 rule of the Internet is that it has to work,? said Dan Kaminsky, a security researcher who years ago pointed out the inherent vulnerabilities of the Domain Name System. ?You can?t stop a DNS flood by shutting down those servers because those machines have to be open and public by default. The only way to deal with this problem is to find the people doing it and arrest them.?

Still, although service has been slowed because of the attack ? streaming services like Netflix have been impacted, as could email and banking services ? Spamhaus said they have not been completely knocked off thanks to the work of the non-profit?s engineers.

BBC went on to report Linford saying sites like Google, which use Spamhaus to filter malicious content, have devoted resources to help take on all the attack?s traffic. CloudFlare was enlisted to help mitigate the attacks as well.

With some Internet users getting stuck in the middle of the feud with slower service, who is in the right here ? Spamhaus or Cyberbunker? The New York Times reported?Patrick Gilmore with digital content provider?Akamai Networks saying Cyberbunker is mad because ?they got caught.?

?They think they should be allowed to spam,? Gilmore continued, confirming it to be the ?largest publicly announced DDoS attack in the history of the Internet.?

The attack is so large that innocent bystanders online have been affected as well.

UK police: Berezovsky's neck had been bound

WINDSOR, England (AP) ? Russian tycoon Boris Berezovsky was found dead on his bathroom floor with his neck bound and a similar piece of material attached to a shower rail, a police officer told a coroner's inquest on Thursday.

Detective Inspector Mark Bissell of Thames Valley Police said there were no signs of a struggle, but that the involvement of a third party "cannot be completely eliminated as tests remain outstanding."

Investigators have not specified the nature of the ligature ? a cord or other material used for binding ? that was found around the neck of the 67-year-old oligarch.

Berezovsky, a one-time Kremlin powerbroker-turned-critic of Russian President Vladimir Putin, lived in self-imposed exile in Britain.

Bissell said Berezovsky was last seen alive at 9:05 p.m. on Friday. His body was found Saturday by a member of his staff at 3:20 p.m. at his mansion in Ascot, 25 miles (40 kilometers) west of London.

Police are still searching the property and toxicology tests are being conducted on Berezovsky's body.

Several wealthy Russians have died suddenly in Britain in recent years ? most notoriously Berezovsky's friend Alexander Litivinenko, who died in 2006 of poisoning after ingesting the radioactive isotope polonium-210. Britain has accused two Kremlin-linked Russians in the killing of the former KGB agent, who had fled to Britain.

Speculation has swirled about possible foul play in Berezovsky's death. But friends also say he was depressed after losing a 35 million pound ($54 million) lawsuit against a former business partner, Chelsea Football Club owner Roman Abramovich.

A mathematician-turned-Mercedes dealer, Berezovsky built up his wealth during Russia's chaotic privatization of state assets in the 1990s following the 1991 breakup of the Soviet Union.

Berezovsky helped build up Putin's power base but fell out of favor and was charged in Russia with fraud and embezzlement.

A U.K. coroner's inquest ? held to determine the facts in cases of violent or unexplained deaths ? opened with a brief hearing Thursday at Windsor's Guildhall, then was adjourned to a later date.

Officials said Berezovsky had legally changed his name to Platon Elenin in 2003 and would be identified by that name at the inquest.
