Shortlist of Directors Surfaces for Captain America 2

captain-america-sequel-2

We?re nearing the date on which we finally get to see The Avengers on the big screen, but Marvel is already busy making plans for their post-Avengers slate. Iron Man 3 begins production in the next few months, followed shortly by Thor 2, and now the studio has whittled down their director shortlist for Captain America 2 to just three names: F. Gary Gray (The Italian Job), George Nolfi (The Adjustment Bureau), and television directors Anthony and Joseph Russo. Hit the jump for more on these lovely contestants in ?Who Wants to Direct a Superhero Movie??

george-nolfi-captain-america-2This shortlist comes courtesy of Vulture, who reports that Marvel has narrowed a list of 10 contenders down to three final choices. Gray is probably best known for the fun caper The Italian Job, but his recent resume hasn?t exactly been gangbusters. With a filmography that includes Law Abiding Citizen, A Man Apart, and The Negotiator, it?s clear Gray?s wheelhouse is with gritty cop dramas, though he has tried his hand at comedy with Friday and Be Cool.

Should Nolfi land the job, Cap?n 2 would make his second feature directorial effort. The Bourne Ultimatum scribe wrote and directed last year?s The Adjustment Bureau with Matt Damon. I actually quite enjoyed the sci-fi adaptation of the Phillip K. Dick story and found it to be a commendable first effort with some fun ?action? sequences and neat ideas. Though the movie didn?t completely work for me, I think Nolfi showed a great deal of promise.

anthony-joe-russo-imageAs for the Russos, they?ve found success as executive producers on Community and Happy Endings, but they appear to be looking to make the move toward large-scale feature films. The two helmed the 2006 comedy You Me and Dupree, and we recently learned that the duo would be directing the actioner Ciudad with Dwayne Johnson in the starring role. They don?t necessarily have a tested track record with action, but their flair for directing ensembles with intricate situations is more than proven.

Of the three choices, I?m most intrigued by Nolfi and the Russos. Nolfi has a nice resume as screenwriter and I was a fan of his directorial debut. I think he captured a great tone and impressive visuals, and I?d be interested to see his take on a Marvel movie. The Russos are a gamble, but it?s obvious they?re serious about moving into action. They wrote the graphic novel off of which Ciudad was based, so they?ve got experience with larger-than-life characters.

captain-america-2-imageNo story details for Captain America 2 are known at this time, but The First Avengers scribes Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely were hired to write the script last summer. In an interview with Steve, they stressed that it would be hard to do a straight-up period piece now that Steve Rogers has already shown up in his future. Though they hadn?t begun writing, they said they hoped to season the sequel with a fair amount of flashbacks, so whomever signs on as director will have to be comfortable in switching time periods.

We reported in January that Captain America 2 may go into production by the end of this year, and with this movement on the director search it definitely seems like Marvel is moving in that direction. No firm release date has been officially announced, but Chris Evans said 2014 was likely. The studio has two unnamed films set for release in 2014, so I?m fairy certain we?ll be seeing Cap again in two years.

Dating Violence Common by 7th Grade: Survey - Domestic Violence ...

HealthDay News
by By Alan Mozes
HealthDay Reporter
Updated: Mar 30th 2012

new article illustration

THURSDAY, March 29 (HealthDay News) -- Psychological and physical abuse is a common facet of dating for America's adolescents, a new survey reveals.

Researchers who polled more than 1,400 seventh graders found that more than 37 percent of 11- to 14-year olds had been the victim of some form of psychological violence, and almost one in six said they had fallen prey to physical violence while in an ongoing relationship.

"Issues of dating abuse among young teens are much more pervasive than I imagine many families believe," said Peter Long, president and CEO of Blue Shield of California Foundation, which co-sponsored the survey with the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the organization Futures Without Violence.

Long said he was startled to see that three-quarters of the students reported they had a boyfriend or girlfriend by their middle-school years.

"That's a big number, and it means that this is the age when many kids are forming their views of what it is to have a relationship," Long said. This indicates that this is the appropriate age to intervene, he added, saying, "High school may even be too late."

The finding that 31 percent of these middle school kids is "experiencing some kind of electronic aggression or pressure such as provocative or insistent texting should be a warning sign for us," Long said, "as is the fact that 15 percent have experienced some kind of physical abuse while dating."

According to U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention questionnaires, 10 percent of American high school students say they have been physically abused by their boyfriend or girlfriend. But clear insight regarding younger teens has been less well investigated, the researchers said.

To address that issue, between 2010 and 2012 surveys were conducted in eight middle schools in five U.S. cities: Los Angeles; Bridgeport, Conn.; Indianapolis; San Diego, and Saginaw, Mich.

The average age of the 1,430 students polled was 12, and boys and girls were equally represented. About one-quarter were white; 30 percent, black; 34 percent, Hispanic and 12 percent were a combination of other races.

The survey defined teen dating violence as any form of physical, sexual or emotional violence occurring within the context of dating. Psychological violence includes controlling behaviors, such as not allowing a girlfriend or boyfriend to do things with other people. Electronic violence covers bullying and name-calling online or via texts, and physical violence includes pushing, grabbing or kicking one's partner.

Asked about these and other behaviors in the previous six months:

  • Thirty-seven percent said that they had seen boys or girls being physically abusive towards their dating partner. About one-quarter had a male or female friend who was physically violent to a partner, and more than 20 percent had a friend whose partner was physically violent to him or her.
  • Forty-nine percent said they had been sexually harassed, either physically or verbally, by being touched inappropriately or joked about.
  • Seven percent strongly agreed that it was okay for a boy to hit his girlfriend under certain circumstances, such as "a girl who makes her boyfriend jealous on purpose." Interestingly, 50 percent strongly agreed that it was OK for a girl to hit her boyfriend in the same siutation.
  • Sixty-three percent agreed with what the pollsters considered a "harmful stereotype" about gender, such as "girls are always trying to get boys to do what they want" or "With boyfriends and girlfriends, boys should be smarter than girls."

"But the good news," Long said, "is that nearly three-quarters of the students reported that in the last six months they have talked to their parents about dating. Not necessarily about dating abuse, but about dating. Which means the door is open for parents to talk to their children about relationships. So, on the one hand we have real serious issues here. But, on the other hand, we also have a real opportunity for parents to engage."

A California mother of two, Alexandra Preston, 35, encourages parents of teens to take the survey findings to heart.

"There's a tendency to read about a study like this and think, 'That can't be true.' Because we want our kids to be safe and happy, and we don't want it to be true, right?"

"But I think it's important that parents acknowledge that understanding and establishing and respecting boundaries is something all of us have to struggle with throughout life, at every age," said Preston, who added that she herself was a victim of domestic violence in a prior marriage.

Preston, whose children are 13 and 10, is finance and operations manager for a non-profit agency that works with Robert Wood Johnson's Start Strong program, which aims to combat dating abuse in middle school. She said her own experiences have led her to be proactive with her children regarding healthy relationships.

Her son "remembers what happened in our home," she said, explaining she tries "to make sense of it, without demonizing the people who do it, and making sure they know it's not their fault."

Preston said this study could be helpful in raising awareness about dating issues, and encouraging parents to listen to their children.

Impact Investing: Finding Resources for CSR Start ... - Business Ethics

by Evan Steiner, Hub Ventures
via?CSRwire

Impact investing is an emerging asset class focused on the flow of capital towards companies that align market incentives with scalable impact. In other words, investing in for-profit companies that are making the world a better place.

Think_Bigger_Sign_iStock_000018675764XSmallIt is a paradigm shift away from a bifurcated non-profit vs. for-profit perspective, into a blended approach that seeks to make money and do good.??The sector, generally referred to as ?social enterprise,? has garnered a lot of attention and interest recently, especially since it represents a way for many to align their careers with their personal values.

After working in impact investing for a short while, I discovered a little secret that people don?t bring up enough: there is actually very little investment being made, especially for seed and early-stage companies.

Reports from?JPMorgan forecasted impact investing to be a $400 billion to one trillion investment opportunity over the next decade. However, right now most of that money exists only for growth stage companies, and it is very difficult for start-up entrepreneurs to get the resources they need to launch their companies. The reasons are fairly consistent: aversion to risk, small investments exceed the operational bandwidth of existing impact investment funds, and few examples of social enterprises that have had exits and liquidity events.

However, if there is little investment available for early-stage companies, how will the sector grow and social enterprise jobs be created?

Aligning Impact Investing and Corporate Social Responsibility

To address the lack of capital and resources to early-stage social ventures,?Hub Ventures was launched in 2010 out of the?Hub Bay Area, a community of social entrepreneurs in San Francisco with over 1,000 members. Hub Ventures is a 12-week accelerator program providing resources and support to seed-stage social ventures.

In order to increase the flow of investment to Hub Ventures participants, we are taking an innovative approach that aligns social responsibility programs of large corporations with the entrepreneurs and companies going through our program.

Recently, Hub Ventures partnered with?Lakeland Ventures Development, whose corporate client is in the business of saving lives.??Lakeland has committed to put $380,000 into startups focused on ?human health and safety,? which includes a broad array of possibilities including clean water, digital health, and public safety.??Lakeland is focused on identifying investment and acquisition opportunities that align with the CSR and core business strategy of their client.

Of the eight to 10 slots for the spring cohort of Hub Ventures, four will be reserved for companies that fit these criteria. Each company will receive $20,000 when accepted and all are eligible for $75,000 at the end of the program.

Most corporate social responsibility focuses on launching green initiatives, giving money to charity, or reducing the footprint of the supply chain. Often these initiatives are just rhetoric, paying lip service to improve the corporate image, and they don?t offer any really substantive solutions to social or environmental challenges.

Lakeland is making investments into companies that are addressing big challenges and that also align with the values of their corporate clients.??It is a much more engaged and action-oriented approach to corporate social responsibility, one that simultaneously benefits the large corporations and the small start-ups.

The companies applying to Hub Ventures represent a diversity of sectors including technology for good, civic engagement, environmental sustainability, public health, poverty alleviation, and more.

My hope is that more corporate clients will see the value in supporting these entrepreneurs and their world changing ideas.

US scepticism ? it's been a long time coming

From Rick Santorum's assertion that global warming is a "hoax" to Rick Perry's support for intelligent design, the current Republican presidential primary season has sometimes seemed like a science-free zone.

But far from being a recent phenomenon, such comments reflect distrust in science among American conservatives that has been building steadily in recent decades. So says Gordon Gauchat of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, who has analysed results from the General Social Survey, which regularly quizzes a representative sample of US adults.

In 1974, those who described themselves as conservatives placed as much trust in science as self-described liberals. But while trust has remained strong among liberals, for conservatives it has gradually declined.

One explanation is a concerted rejection by US conservatives of the "liberal establishment" ? which includes the academic institutions in which many scientists work. That would explain comments from Santorum in February: "President Obama once said he wants everybody in America to go to college," the candidate claimed. "What a snob? Oh, I understand why he wants you to go to college: he wants to remake you in his image."

Gauchat's findings may also reflect clashes between supporters of conservative ideology and particular areas of science. The rise of the Christian right, which rejects evolutionary theory and opposes research on embryonic stem cells, may have been particularly important ? Gauchet found a similar decline in trust in science among frequent churchgoers. More recently, conservatives have come to fear that global warming will provide an excuse for "big government" to restrict their personal freedom through environmental regulation.

The decline isn't due to ignorance: it has been strongest among conservatives with the most education. "The educated conservative understands the culture war ? how the ideology applies to specific policy areas," Gauchat suggests.

That makes sense to Dietram Scheufele, a specialist in science communication at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, who doesn't believe that conservatives are inherently anti-science. "Liberals and conservatives both apply their lenses to how they view reality," he adds.

Once the Republican primaries are over, the successful candidate will have to appeal beyond ideologically committed conservatives to the broader electorate. But if that sounds reassuring, consider this: only in the past few years did the level of trust reported by conservatives dip below that of self-described moderates who had low trust in science throughout.

Gauchat says that these people are in general less educated and seem to view science as alien and threatening, rather than being concerned about its political influence. As there are no fundamental ideological barriers to overcome, moderates may be more amenable to persuasion that science can be a force for good. But there's work to be done: as any politician knows, the battle for hearts and minds is ultimately won and lost in the centre.

When It Comes To Media Devices, Being First Never Means Being Best

shutterstock_83202964Our good buddy Farhad Manjoo writes over at Slate that he believes Microsoft has already beaten Apple at the living room game. Why buy an Apple TV - either in its current form or in some sort of Siri-powered large-screen LCD form (which we'll call ATV) - when your Xbox 360 does everything you want it to right now. Sadly, he's wrong. While Microsoft has improved their offering considerably and while voice commands are fun, there is still no compelling reason to buy an Xbox just for its streaming capabilities, nor is there any compelling reason to buy any one streaming system over any other. As they say, all set-top boxes make users unhappy in their own way.

The AirPlay market doesn't seem to be shrinking anytime soon, giving Logitech ample opportunity to tread on ground already marked by the likes of JBL and Klipsch. This morning, the outfit's introducing the Logitech UE Air Speaker with AirPlay technology, enabling uncompressed audio streams to flow from one's iTunes library, iPad, iPhone or iPod touch right to the home stereo. You'll need both the boombox and your AirPlay source connected to the same WiFi network, after which you can pipe sine waves to its pair of tweeters and woofers. Users will need to download the (gratis) Logitech UE Air app for setup, which will be infinitely more useful when the speaker itself starts to ship to Europe and the US this April for $399.99.

Home Staging Careers | Home Staging as a Career

What is Home Staging

Perfectly arranged houses are not usually the norm. This is not necessarily the case when it comes to houses up for sale or rent. In these homes, the furniture is typically in pristine condition and painstakingly placed. Not a speck of dust can be seen in these homes, and clutter is carefully stowed away, out of site. There are also usually several little touches throughout the home, like fresh cut flowers or even the smell of apple pie, that help make them more than mere architectural structures. These small touches often help make any space feel cozy and inviting, like home.

These little details are not an accident, nor are they usually representative of the average home. They are also not typically the product of perfect housekeepers. Instead, these homes on the market are usually staged to ensure that every aspect of them is appealing.

Home staging is the practice of preparing a piece of residential property for sale or rent. The entire purpose of home staging is to make the residence appear as attractive and appealing as possible to prospective buyers. The purpose of home staging is simple ? homes that are staged sell faster than homes that aren?t, on average. Some studies have shown that staged homes also sell for more than unstaged homes.

What Does a Home Stager Do?

The first task of a professional home stager is to inspect and analyze the residence up for sale. In doing so, she will then be able to recognize any unattractive and unappealing aspects of the property. A home stager will then usually advise the seller on how to improve the property.

A home stager will usually attempt to correct the necessary and most obvious problems first. This may include things like cleaning and landscaping. Carpets are shampooed, surfaces are wiped clean, clutter is eliminated, grass is mowed, and hedges are trimmed. Any necessary repairs and maintenance will also usually be done as well. This may include little things like repairing peeling wallpaper and repainting, as well as larger jobs, such as patching holes in the wall or replacing the carpeting.

After the most obvious issues are taken care of, a home stager will then usually begin working on decorating the residence. Furniture is often meticulously and carefully placed in order to maximize the space. A home stager will also pay particular attention to the flow of traffic in a room when placing furniture as well. Other small touches are usually added last. This includes decorations like artwork and fresh cut flowers.

When showing a residence to possible buyers, it is often the little details that will reel them in at the end. There are a number of little tricks that a home stager can use to make a residence feel warm, cozy, and inviting. Many home stagers use potential buyers? senses of smell to their advantage, for instance. They will introduce inviting and homey scents to a residence before a showing. This can include the use of air fresheners and candles, or even a fresh pie baking in the oven.

What Are the Necessary Education Requirements For a Successful Home Staging Career?

Technically, there are no strict education requirements for starting a home staging career. However, a sound understanding of what aspects make a home appealing is very important in this career path. Because of this, those interested in home staging careers should consider some type of formal training.

Specific courses and certificate programs are also available for those interested in home staging careers. These programs typically take anywhere from a few days to a few weeks to complete. Instead of just taking these basic courses, however, serious home planners may want to consider earning college degrees.

Interior design degree programs will often help students learn the fundamentals of interior design and decorating. This will often include courses in color schemes, furniture placement, window treatments, and basic home design.

Some home stagers might also work to sell real estate as well as preparing homes for showings. This usually requires an additional real estate degree, along with a real estate license.

Where Do Home Stagers Work?

Home stagers are often able to find employment in a number of different areas.

Some home stagers, for instance, might work for large real estate agencies, staging homes before showings and open houses. Home construction companies and modular home manufacturers might also work with home stagers, who are responsible for setting up and decorating newly constructed and modular homes for interested buyers to look at.

A home stager also has the option of setting up her own business, especially after she has gained some experience and added to her list of clients.

What is the Average Salary of a Home Stager?

Salaries of different home stagers will often vary, depending on each professional?s skills and experience. Location also usually plays a role in how much these professionals make as well.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics does not record specific salary data , which makes determining possible salaries of these professionals even more difficult. The BLS, however, does collect salary data of some other related professions. Interior designers, for instance, made an average salary of $52,100 in 2010. Real estate sales agents made $52,490 in that same year.

Mali army claims upper hand over rebels amid coup disarray

Malian soldiers on Sunday repelled a fresh attack by Tuareg rebels in the north following a coup as the junta struggled to restore order after ousting the west African nation's president.

The Tuareg had said they were advancing on the key northern town of Kidal, but a military official in the town told AFP the rebels had been pushed back.

"Today we repelled an attack by Islamist rebels," a military official in Kidal told AFP on condition of anonymity, referring to one of two rebel movements fighting for independence of the traditional homeland of the desert nomads.

The desert tribes in January launched their first rebellion since 2009 in a decades-old demand for independence, boosted by the return of heavily-armed battle-hardened fighters from Libya who served late dictator Moamer Kadhafi.

Their forces overwhelmed the weak Malian army, and scores of soldiers are said to have been killed and captured, causing anger among troops over the way the conflict is being handled by the government.

Angry soldiers revolted in Bamako Wednesday, leading to a full-blown coup early Thursday as they seized government buildings and forced the president to flee.

Junta leader Captain Amadou Sanogo has invited the rebels to hold talks and begin a "peace process" as he tries to restore order.

Bamako was tense on Sunday with few people venturing out as security forces patrolled the streets.

Banks and most shops were shut in the usually bustling city, although some petrol stations have reopened after being asked to do so by the junta.

President Amadou Toumani Toure's whereabouts are unknown, but he is believed to be safe under the protection of his loyalist paratrooper guard, while 14 members of his government detained by the putschists have threatened a hunger strike.

"There are 14 of us in a room of 12 square metres, sleeping three to a mattress. Our basic rights are being violated," said a message from one of the officials sent to AFP.

They are being held at the Kati military barracks outside Bamako where Sanogo is seeking to reinforce the impression of control, holding meetings and making several public declarations.

He met French ambassador Christian Rouyer and other dignitaries on Saturday, state television reported, but the junta has been largely frozen out by the international community in a chorus of rebukes and suspension of aid.

On Sunday, Nairobi announced that the Kenyan and Zimbabwean foreign ministers were evacuated by a chartered flight after being stranded in Mali following the coup.

After widespread looting by soldiers in the coup aftermath, the junta urged "all those in uniform to report to their barracks for an inspection" and reminded unit commanders they were responsible for their men.

On Saturday Sanogo took to the television to show he was still alive and douse rumours of a counter-attack by loyalist troops.

The Tuareg rebels said in the wake of the coup they would continue their offensive, and The Islamist rebel group Ansar Dine, or Defenders of Faith in Arabic, said Saturday its fighters had surrounded Kidal.

"Thanks to Allah the almighty and his blessings, we will soon take our land in Kidal," said a statement from the group.

While Ansar Dine is demanding the imposition of Islamic law, the other rebel group, the Azawad National Liberation Movement (MNLA) has distanced itself from religious objectives.

Mali will on Monday will mark the 21st anniversary of the last coup, when Toure led the overthrow of dictator Moussa Traore and steered the country to its first democratic election a year later for which he is considered a hero.

After Mali's democratic advances in the past two decades, Thursday's coup alarmed the international community which reacted with swift condemnation.

The African Union temporarily suspended Mali, while Europe and Canada froze aid and the United States has threatened to follow suit.

A joint mission from the African Union and Economic Community of West African States met representatives of the junta on Friday, according to Mali state television, without giving further details.

ECOWAS heads of state will hold an emergency meeting in Abidjan on Tuesday, the day the junta has called for civil servants to return to work.

Buffaloes, Bruins, and Bulls

Weighing up to 2,000 pounds, buffaloes are a tough out. They outran runnin? rebels in the first round and treed bears in the second. These Blue Devils, meanwhile, have an even better weapon than horns: guns. Still, these WWI-era French soldiers? weapons aren?t automatic, and neither is their victory here. Dropping a trophy bull when it?s just standing around is easy enough, provided your firearm is of sufficient caliber. (It can also be done with smarts and planning: Before the introduction of the horse, Plains Indians would herd buffalo off of cliffs.) But our death match assumes all contestants are angry and motivated, and a sudden buffalo charge is no joke. Since bison are endemic to North America, Les Diables Bleus have little experience with the beasts and might not know just where to aim. They could try to press their flowing blue capes into service until the buffaloes tire, though that?s exceedingly risky. Our guess is that they?re likely to draw on their experience fighting in mountainous terrain and will stake out positions in the bleachers from which to snipe. Not all will survive, but at least one or two will survive to kill the last of the herd.
