GOP hopefuls sound off on education

Michele Bachmann

Said she?d ?turn out the lights? at the federal Department of Education as soon as she takes office.

Mitt Romney

Wants to abolish federal Department of Education. Supports quality-based incentives for teachers.

Newt Gingrich

Wants per-pupil funding so parents can choose their child?s school. Parents who home-school their children would get a tax credit. Wants to make it easier to fire incompetent teachers.

Rick Perry

Department of Education is one of three federal agencies he?d abolish (others are Department of Commerce and Department of Energy). Wants to increase emphasis on core subjects. Supports balancing accountability with incentives for teachers.

Ron Paul

Wants to abolish federal Department of Education. Considers himself a champion of home-schooling. Against vouchers, but favors income tax credits for parents who opt out of the public school system.

Barack Obama

Pushed to raise education standards. Provided funding to keep teachers on the job in tight budget times. Encouraged STEM ? science, technology, engineering and math ? education. Wants to give states more flexibility to improve schools.
