Writer Unboxed ? What Are the BEST Writers' Conferences To Attend?

?What writers? conference would you recommend? Which one is the best to attend??

I get this question all the time. I?m guessing that people decide they?re going to ?do it right? and hit up a big event?? and they are just trying to make sure that they get some serious bang for their buck.

Now, to answer the question, let?s just acknowledge immediately that there is no definitive answer. It will be different for everyone, so we must examine three things: 1) the different kinds of writers? events, 2) how money plays into a decision, and 3) what you want to get out of the event.

DIFFERENT TYPES OF EVENTS

1. General writers? conferences. These are just what you think they are ? writers? conferences that are general in nature and geared toward all categories and levels of writers. There are hundreds of these nationwide every year, and a lot of the biggest fall under this category.
2. Writers? conferences with a specialized focus. There are plenty of these, too. These gatherings have a unique focus to them ? and that usually means they are all about romance writing, or Christian writing, or children?s/juvenile writing, or screenwriting (& TV), or mystery/thriller writing.
3. Writing retreats. Retreats are unique in that the focus is about craft and actually sitting down to write. There are usually no agents present, because that is not the purpose of the whole thing. You find a serene location somewhere and just try to focus and write. Lots of MFA profs, etc., teach these things, and there are even several overseas.

LET?S TALK MONEY?

Yes, money can and should play into your decision. Obviously, it?s a lot easier to drive 20 miles to a conference and be able to come home each night to tuck the kids in than it is to fly to Alaska for four nights. And let?s face it: A lot of events are expensive ? and not every up-and-coming scribe can manage the required dough.

The first thing I recommend you do is look local. There are tons of events every year, so there?s a good chance a conference may be near you. Try simply using Google and search ?writers conference? and ?(city)? or ?state? and see what comes up. Example: Perhaps you live in Virginia? There are sizeable events in Newport News, Hampton Roads, Richmond and Roanoke. Then there?s the regional SCBWI conference that varies locations between Virginia, DC and Maryland. And you?ve also got at least one general conference in Washington, D.C. each year. That?s a lot of nearby opportunities!

Check out the regional chapter sites for the SCBWI (kids writers), MWA (mystery writers) and RWA (romance). All three large organizations have many regional chapters, plenty of which put on an annual or biannual event.

If money is an issue, consider just attending part of a conference. A lot of conferences have various options that affect your fee?? attending dinners, participating in pitch slams, access to special sessions, etc. Pay attention to any and all pricing options.

Lastly?? and I don?t know why more people don?t take advantage of this?? consider combining a conference and a vacation (or work trip). Two birds with one stone. Got a relative in San Diego or Atlanta? See them and hit a conference on the same trip to save travel costs. Plus, you can write off most of your expenses next April.

WHAT DO YOU WANT TO GET OUT OF THE EXPERIENCE?

This question, obviously, is key.

Perhaps if you want to just sit down and write ? maybe finally start that novel ? then an intensive retreat is just what you need.

If you?re not sure what you need (perhaps you?re creating a lot of different stories and writing projects), then a general conference sounds like a good bet.

If you?re actively looking for writing critique partners and beta readers, then aim local?? so you can meet other local writers and form a group that will pay off with valuable peer edits down the road.

If your work is polished and the only thing on your mind is pitching, then you?re looking for an event that has not only a sizeable number of agents and editors attending?? but more specifically, a good amount of professionals who seek the genre/category you?re writing. If you attend a large conference and pay $600 to schmooze with 20 agents, it won?t be of much help if only 1-2 will consider that travel memoir you?ve composed.

If you want eyes on your work, look for a conference that offers a personal critique of your writing. Some even offer a variety of critiques from pros, so you can different perspectives and opinions on your work.

If you want to visit someplace beautiful, you can certainly do that. I will rarely turn down an invitation to instruct in Jackson Hole, WY (gorgeous! hiking!) or Las Vegas, NV (craps! more craps!). Certainly, a particular locale can be enticing for one reason or another.

If you want to immerse yourself in your category, seek out a specialized conference. The national events for the SCBWI, MWA and RWA are absolutely huge, and are constructed all around the genre(s), so you won?t be short on relevant sessions or agents who will consider your story. Christian writing and screenwriting conferences can also be a good option, as well.

If your whole goal is ?The bigger the better,? I can throw out some of the biggest events in the country. Again, I stress that while big conferences grow large for a reason (they are often awesome), that does not mean they?re the absolute best option for you. Money, location, and goals must all be factored in. Plenty of small events are great and have seen attendees have success. That said, off the top of my head, I would save some of the largest general conferences in the country (not genre specific) include the following: Pacific Northwest Writers Conference (Seattle), Willamette Writers Conference (Portland), San Francisco Writers Conference, our own Writer?s Digest Conferences in New York and Los Angeles, the Rocky Mountain Fiction Writers Conference (Denver), Agents and Editors Conference (Austin), South Carolina Writers Workshop (Myrtle Beach), Muse & the Marketplace (Boston), and the Backspace Writers Conference (New York).

CHOOSE WISELY

My best guess is that there are approximately 200 writing conferences a year in the United States alone. That?s a lot of options?? so take your time, do some research, and see what a conference has to offer. If possible, use Google to find testimonials from writers who have been there and done that?? and pay attention to what they liked and disliked about an event.

No matter what conference you choose, I simply urge you to go to conferences. Get out there! I am a huge proponent of events, as they are an incredible opportunity to learn, get critiques, meet professionals, and make writing friends for life. They are, without a doubt, worth the effort to attend. Long-acting birth control devices are nearly 22 times as reliable as contraceptive pills or other short-acting approaches that need close monitoring, a new study shows. Since about half of all unplanned pregnancies are traceable to failed birth control, switching to a long-term, reversible contraceptive could prevent many accidental pregnancies, researchers say.

?As a doctor, if you had a drug for cancer or hypertension that was 20-fold better than the next drug, you would never write [a prescription] for that other drug,? says study coauthor Jeffrey Peipert, a physician and epidemiologist at Washington University in St. Louis. ?We hope that clinicians will re-think what is standard practice ? that a young woman comes in and gets pills or condom counseling. We have methods that are much, much better.?

The findings also hint that if cost were not an issue, most women given a choice of common hormone-based contraceptives would prefer the long-acting devices. About 77 percent of the women who volunteered for the new study chose an intrauterine device (IUD) or a small implant placed under the skin while only 20 percent requested shorter-acting options such as the pill, a vaginal ring or a skin patch. Fewer still opted for hormone injections called Depo-Provera. All costs were covered by the study. The findings appear in the May 24 New England Journal of Medicine.

?This study brought home how big a difference there is between effective methods and really effective methods? of contraception, and comes at a time when demand for birth control is growing, says Lawrence Finer, a demographer and public health researcher at the Guttmacher Institute and Columbia University in New York City. The point at which women are getting married and giving birth is getting later, he says. ?But the age at first sex hasn?t changed that much. You?ve got a long period where people need contraception.?

The researchers monitored 7,486 girls and women who were given the hormonal contraceptive of their choice. (The researchers didn?t offer barrier devices such as condoms or diaphragms.) During three years of follow-up, there were 156 unintended pregnancies that were attributable to some form of contraceptive failure. The pill/patch/ring group had failure rates that ranged from 4.8 percent after the first year to 9.4 percent after the third year, while the long-term devices and injections showed failure rates of less than 1 percent each year.

Teenagers have a lot to gain from long-acting devices, since their record of adhering to daily or on-the-spot birth control is inconsistent, says James Trussell, an economist and public health researcher at Princeton University. ?That?s the wonderful thing about these long-acting methods ? the implants and IUDs. There are no adherence problems. We call them ?fit and forget.??

But misconceptions about contraceptives? effectiveness remain, he says. ?Plenty of researchers have asked people open-ended questions about which contraceptive is more effective,? he says. ?A huge fraction get it wrong.?

Peipert says doubts about safety linger as well, in part due to the Dalkon Shield, an IUD from the 1970s that was linked to pelvic infections and pulled from shelves. IUDs no longer have this flaw, but the incident gave them a bad reputation, he says. ?Clinicians steered away from giving an IUD to young women or those who hadn?t yet had children. I don?t think that?s a worry anymore. These methods are very safe.?

Dell XPS 8500

I've never really liked the term prosumer, but the Dell XPS 8500 ($2,049.99 direct) practically screams it. Positioned between Dell's Inspiron value desktops and Alienware gaming rigs, the XPS 8500 targets digital content creators, game players, and power users who'd probably never buy a Digital Storm, Velocity Micro, or other boutique brand, but who crave more performance than generic retail PCs provide.

The XPS 8500 gets that performance from one of Intel's new "Ivy Bridge" quad-core processors?the 3.4GHz Core i7-3770?and AMD's speedy Radeon HD 7870 graphics card, along with a 256GB Samsung mSATA solid-state drive plus 3TB Seagate 7,200 rpm hard drive. It also fixes a couple of omissions that affected its Dell XPS 8300 (X8300-7008NBK) ($999.99 list, 3.5 stars) predecessor (hello, USB 3.0 and Blu-ray burner!). The result is a well-built if conservatively built desktop; it's fast, but not as fast as less-famous-name systems that cost the same or a little more with overclocked processors or dual graphics cards or both, such as our midrange gaming Editors' Choice Cyberpower Zeus Thunder 3000SE ($2,299 direct, 4 stars).

Design and Features
Dell was so proud of upgrading the XPS's front-mounted USB ports from USB 2.0 to 3.0 that it removed the sliding door that covered them, the better to show them off. The two ports now appear in the midst of the mid-tower's chrome-accented glossy black front panel, below the optical drive bays and the four-slot memory-card reader. A recessed tray on the system's top serves to hold flash drives, cameras, or other knickknacks; it offers two USB 2.0 ports, one powered to recharge handheld devices, along with microphone and headphone jacks.

Connections at the rear include two more USB 3.0 and four more USB 2.0 ports, Gigabit Ethernet, six audio jacks, and an SPDIF audio output. The eSATA port found on the XPS 8300 has gone away. The AMD graphics card provides DVI, HDMI, and two Mini DisplayPort connectors.

Removing one thumbscrew lets you pop off one of the matte black side panels and access the tidy interior. Aside from accommodation for one additional hard drive and a secondary optical drive (there are two SATA ports free on the motherboard), there's not a lot of room for expansion: Each of the four memory slots holds a 4GB DIMM for a total 16GB of DDR3-1600 (Dell says 32GB systems will be available later this year). The double-wide Radeon HD 7870 card leaves just two PCIe x1 slots free. Fortunately, you don't need to add a PCIe card or USB adapter to go wireless, since a Wi-Fi and Bluetooth Mini PCIe card is standard. The XPS 8500 has a 460-watt power supply, which Dell says is enough for a 225-watt graphics card. Despite its array of cooling fans, the system is pleasantly quiet.

Dell preloads the 256GB (177GB free) SSD boot drive with Windows 7 Home Premium, a trial of McAfee SecurityCenter, 2GB of DataSafe cloud storage for one year, and a handful of utilities. The speedy drive boots the system in 34 seconds, too fast for the circling "Starting Windows" lights to finish forming the Windows logo. The 3TB data drive has 2.72TB of free space. We weren't wild about Dell's newest wireless keyboard, which has a good typing feel but a laptop-style layout, with small Home, End, PgUp, and PgDn keys located above the numeric keypad instead of full-sized ones between the keypad and primary keys.

Dell backs the XPS 8500 with a one-year limited parts and labor warranty including accidental damage coverage and on-site service. At presstime, the $1,999.99-plus-wireless-keyboard Radeon 7870/3TB/Blu-ray configuration sent to PCMag for testing was hidden on Dell's site (link here) in favor of two models with slightly tamer Radeon 7770 cards, 2TB hard drives, and DVD burners?a $1,799.99 rig with the 256GB SSD and a $1,299.99 configuration with 12GB of RAM and a 32GB SSD using Intel Smart Response Technology for OS and application caching.

Performance
Generally speaking, the XPS 8500 easily outstrips other consumer PCs like the HP Pavilion HPE Phoenix h9z and stays within sight of more exotic gaming systems like the Cyberpower 3000SE. Its PCMark 7 score of 5,458 landed between the Zeus Thunder (5,283) and Digital Storm ODE Level 3 (5,825), while obliterating the 3,148 of its predecessor, the XPS 8300 (X8300-7008NBK). The XPS 8500 sped through our Handbrake video encoding test in 1 minute 4 seconds, which only the most impatient user would find slow compared to the Cyberpower or Digital Storm (0:55 and 0:56, respectively).

The XPS 8500 easily passed the three-figure frames-per-second threshold at medium settings (1,280 by 720 resolution) in the DirectX10 test Crysis (114 fps) and the DirectX 11 test Lost Planet 2 (125 fps), roughly doubling the frame rates of the HP Phoenix h9z. At high-quality settings at 1,920 by 1,080 resolution, it passed the playable (30 fps) threshold with 40 and 48 fps, respectively, but fell well short of the Cyberpower 3000SE (84 and 125) and Digital Storm ODE (71 and 121).

The Dell XPS 8500 is a winning choice in the off-the-shelf, non-overclocked, single-graphics-card market segment?which sounds like faint praise, but is a segment that accounts for a ton of sales to satisfied consumers (or prosumers, if you will). In terms of our Editors' Choice categories, our test unit is too costly to unseat our entry-level gaming pick, the Alienware X51 ($999.99 direct, 4 stars), and lacks the graphics chops to topple our midrange gaming pick, the Cyberpower Zeus Thunder 3000SE. Sprint Phones

Sprint likes to call itself "the Now Network," but it really should be named "the Promise Network," because right now all it is selling is the promise of 4G LTE at some point in the future. The carrier recently announced that it is dumping its mediocre 4G WiMAX network in favor of LTE on new handsets. That's the right move long-term, but it leaves current Sprint customers in a bind.

The company is selling 4G LTE phones such as the Samsung Galaxy Nexus and LG Viper 4G LTE, but they'll only get a 3G signal until Sprint launches its new network. The carrier plans to roll out LTE this summer to just six cities ? Atlanta, Baltimore, Dallas, Houston, Kansas City and San Antonio ? with no ETA for other cities apart from 123 million people covered by the end of the year.? Even if you live in one of the designated six markets, there's no guarantee that Sprint's implementation of LTE will be as fast as AT&T and Verizon's; we just don't know.

Whether you are already a Sprint customer or are just thinking of becoming one, you should wait to see how quickly the company's version of LTE is coming to your area and whether it actually lives up to the hype. You don't want to buy that Evo 4G LTE today, only to be stuck with 2007-era 3G speeds while your friends on Verizon and AT&T are cruising along at 4G.

MacBook Pros

If you have your heart set on an Apple MacBook Pro, tell your heart to go on without one for just a little longer. Everyone expects Apple to announce a new lineup of MacBook Pros in June and these new notebooks will reportedly weigh less, feature high-resolution "Retina" displays and provide USB 3.0 ports in addition to running Ivy Bridge CPUs. These notebooks will also be running Apple's new OS X Mountain Lion software, which brings more iPad-like functionality to Macs along with stronger security.

Android Tablets

Apple enthusiasts don't have anything to wait for when it comes to tablets. The "new" iPad just came out in March and has an incredible, high-res screen paired with a powerful processor. However, if you want to consider an Android tablet, now is not the time to buy.

Though we've seen some speedy quad-core tablets like the ASUS Eee Pad Transformer Prime, we're still waiting for Android tablet makers to come out with screens that have higher than 1280 x 800 resolution. Both ASUS and Acer have announced 1920 x 1200 tablets, but neither one has hit the market yet. If you plunk down $500 on a tablet now, you'll feel silly when the new HD models arrive within the next couple of months.

Smart TVs

Apple can play coy all it wants, but many industry insiders believe that the Cupertino company plans to launch its own TV later this year. There's no question that the Apple TV will have deep iTunes integration, a gorgeous screen (Apple is known for that) and some kind of Siri-based voice control.?

When it comes to launching new Smart TVs, Apple won't be alone. LG recently showed off its G2 Smart TV, which uses the Google TV 2.0 interface, supports voice commands and comes with a gesture-controlled "Magic" remote. Lenovo just began shipping its ?Android 4.0- powered K55 ?Smart TV in China and it may come here at some point as well. If you wait, the additional competition from these new products will force down prices on existing Smart TVs as well.

The Nokia Lumia 900 has a gorgeous design and the HTC Titan II has an awesome 16-MP camera. However, when it comes to specs, apps and basic multitasking, Windows Phones still lag behind their Android and iPhone counterparts.?

With Windows Phone 8 due out this fall, Microsoft could finally start to close the feature gap with Apple and Google. According to some reports, the new mobile operating system will support higher resolution screens, dual-core CPUs, NFC payments and apps that can control other apps, a necessity for true multitasking.

Microsoft has issued some conflicting statements about whether current Windows Phones would get an OS upgrade so I wouldn't count on the Lumia you buy today running Windows 8 tomorrow. If you're attracted to Windows Phone, delay your purchase until fall. Otherwise, you'll be living with a single-core, low-res handset for two years.

There are several great eReader options on the market right now, from the tablet-like Amazon Kindle Fire to the E Ink-powered Nook Simple Touch. However, as strong as the eReader offerings are today, they're about to get much better. Barnes & Noble just released its Simple Touch with GlowLight and rumor has it that Amazon is set to release its own backlit E Ink-based Kindle this summer.

However, backlit E Ink is just the tip of this innovative ice berg. Expect Amazon to launch the second-generation Kindle Fire 2 this fall, complete with higher-res screen options and possibly larger form factors like 8.9 inches. Flush with investment money from Microsoft and not content to stand still, Barnes & Noble is sure to release a new Nook Tablet sometime later this year as well. We'd expect the next Nook to also have a higher resolution than 1024 x 600.?

There's also a persistent rumor that Amazon will release Kindles using color E Ink later this year. We just reviewed the color E Ink-powered Ectaco Jetbook Color so the technology is already out there. How bad would you feel if you bought an old-school grayscale Kindle today, only to see one with a backlight or a color screen come out within a few months?

BlackBerrys

Research in Motion, the company that makes Blackberry phones, seems to be stuck in a time warp, offering phones that have the best specs of 2009, including single-core 800-MHz CPUs, tiny 2.4-inch screens and an ?outmoded BlackBerry 7 OS. Fortunately, most people aren't foolish enough to buy phones that you'd expect to find in the bargain bin at a garage sale rather than the shelf at a Verizon store.?

RIM seems to understand the problem, too, and it plans to release an entirely new line of phones running its new BlackBerry 10 OS later this year. The new touch-friendly BlackBerry London phone, complete with a bigger screen and faster processor than we've seen on a BlackBerry before, should arrive by fall. If you must have a BlackBerry, this is the one to wait for.
