June 7 (Reuters) - An unheralded trio shared the lead after the first round of the LPGA Championship on Thursday as Spain's Beatriz Recari, Giulia Sergas of Italy and American Ryann O'Toole posted three-under-par 69s in the first round of the major championship.

With one career victory among them, they upstaged more familiar names in the field at the Locust Hill Country Club, including last year's winner and world number one Yani Tseng, who struggled to a four-over-par 76.

Tseng, who felt tightness in her left wrist and forearm and received some massage treatment before her round, won last year's championship in Pittsford, New York by 10 strokes but found herself seven back after the opening round.

Recari, who recorded a victory in her rookie season on the LPGA Tour in 2010, posted her score among the early starters and saw it hold up with only fellow 25-year-old O'Toole and 32-year-old Sergas matching it.

By contrast with the other two, Sergas had a rollercoaster of a round, balancing three bogeys with three birdies through her first 14 holes before finishing strongly with birdies at the 15th, 16th and 18th holes to join them at three under par.

"They were silly bogeys," said the Italian said, who teed off in the last group of the day. "Like one bogey I was in the middle of the fairway 100 yards to the pin. So I was thinking, I was hoping, birdie and I ended up having a bogey.

"And another one, it was just a missed chip from the high rough around the green. So they were silly. They could have been par really."

Seven players were tied for fourth place just one shot back, including 2010 champion Cristie Kerr of the United States who won at Locust Hill by a massive 12 strokes.

Kerr said the heavy rough grown was a factor in keeping the scores modest. She and Tseng both posted totals of 19 under par in their victories here the last two years.

"I think it is going to play tougher," Kerr said. "The rough is measurably worse than the year that I won. It's just a lot thicker."

"It was very long that year, but it wasn't like really dense. I mean even with sand wedges out, it's a lot tougher.

"It's just gobbling up the golf balls this year."

Joining Kerr at two-under-par 70 were American Paula Creamer, South Korean world number two Choi Na-yeon and her compatriots Pak Se-ri and Jang Jeong, as well as Japanese Ai Miyazato and Mika Miyazato.

Six more players were another shot back at 71, two off the pace, including former winner Suzann Pettersen of Norway.

The 34-year-old Pak, who injured her shoulder in a freak fall earlier this year, was surprised to be in the hunt after only two weeks playing with her full swing.

"I never expect that's going to be solid round today," three-time LPGA Championship winner Pak said. "The last two days in practice were so-so.

"Low expectations help a lot."

One newcomer to the pro circuit received encouragement from a 14-times grand slam winner.

Cheyenne Woods, in her first tournament round as a professional, shot a three-over 75 after getting some encouraging text messages from her uncle, Tiger Woods.

"(He said) Just trust my abilities, have fun and be patient," she said.

CHICAGO (AP) ? A Pakistani-born Chicago taxi driver was sentenced to 7 ? years in prison Friday for attempting to send money to a terrorist with alleged links to al-Qaida.

Before his punishment was handed down, Raja Lahrasib Khan asked U.S. District Judge James Zagel for mercy.

"I made a bad decision. I did something for which I am ashamed," the bald, bearded Khan told the federal courtroom in Chicago, his wife bowing her head and weeping as he spoke.

Khan, 58, pleaded guilty earlier this year to one count of attempting to provide material support to terrorism. His plea agreement with prosecutors recommended a five- to eight-year sentence ? well short of the 15-year maximum.

The case hinged on secret recordings, including some made in Khan's taxicab. He was never charged with a terrorist attempt, but the original complaint said he talked about planting bags of bombs in an unspecified stadium.

"Put one bag here, one there, one there ... you know, boom, boom, boom, boom," a man, purported to be Khan, says in one wiretap, according to the 35-page complaint affidavit filed after his arrest two years ago.

Authorities arrested Khan in 2010 and accused him of taking steps to send cash to Pakistan-based terrorist leader Ilyas Kashmiri after Kashmiri said he needed money for explosives. Khan believed Kashmiri was getting orders from Osama bin Laden, prosecutors said.

Khan has been held in a federal jail in Chicago since his arrest.

Khan, who became a naturalized U.S. citizen in 1988, sent $950 in 2009 to an individual in Pakistan for delivery to Kashmiri; he also took $1,000 from an undercover agent and said it would be used to buy weapons and possibly other supplies, prosecutors alleged.

Asked earlier this year why Khan agreed to plead guilty, his attorney, Thomas Durkin, said finding jurors who could give his client a fair trial would have been difficult.

"The word 'al-Qaida' scares the bejesus out of people and that's all (jurors) have to hear," Durkin said.

Crustacean's claw delivers blow like Thor

If sea creatures were Marvel comic book characters, the peacock mantis shrimp would be Thor. These colorful crustaceans have a hammerlike claw that can smash prey with the acceleration of a .22-caliber bullet ? not unlike the superhero's mythological weapon.

Now, a new study reveals the secrets behind the strength of the mantis shrimp's claw at the molecular level. It turns out this appendage is ideally adapted to deliver punishing blow after punishing blow without breaking. These adaptations are already inspiring researchers to engineer biology-mimicking materials that could inspire everything from better boat propellers to safer body armor.

"What makes (mantis shrimp claws) so incredible is that they're stiff and they're also tough, which is really kind of an inverse relationship in materials science," said study researcher David Kisailus, a materials scientist at the University of California, Riverside.

Dangerous claw
Using electron microscopes and other sensitive techniques, Kisailus and his colleagues delved deep into the claw of the Indo-Pacific peacock mantis shrimp (Odontodactylus scyllarus). These crustaceans aren't actually shrimp, but they get their name from their shrimplike appearance, which Kisailus and his colleagues compare to "heavily armored caterpillars" in this week's issue of the journal Science. Peacock mantis shrimp are solitary, territorial hunters. They lurk in dens or seafloor tunnels and use their hammerlike claws to kill mollusks, crabs and other tasty treats.

Fishermen sometimes call mantis shrimp "thumb-splitters," for reasons that aren't hard to imagine, given that the shrimp can wield their claws at speeds of 75 feet (23 meters) per second and deliver blows with 200 pounds (91 kg) of force behind them despite being only 4 inches (10 cm) long. These blows also create bubbles in the water that strike prey with about half the force of the initial strike. [Video: See Mantis Shrimp Strike]

Kisailus has experienced these forces firsthand, thanks to the mantis shrimp he keeps in his lab. Curiosity has gotten the best of him and his colleagues, Kisailus told LiveScience, and they have, on occasion, stuck their fingers in the mantis shrimp tanks ? with multiple layers of rubber gloves and wax film for protection.

"It still hurts like hell," Kisailus said. "It didn't break our fingers after putting so many layers on, but I'm sure if we didn't, it would have."

Secrets of strength
Mantis shrimp molt and replace their claws every few months, but they still strike tens of thousands of times with each iteration of these clublike appendages. Kisailus and his colleagues found that this incredible strength comes from three different regions in the claw. The impact region, or striking surface, is dominated by a mineral called hydroxyapatite, a calcium-containing substance that gives human bones their hardness. The mineral is arranged so that it forms pillars perpendicular to the striking surface, not unlike a concrete pylon holding up a bridge.

A second region called the periodic region backs up the impact zone with chitosan, a carbohydrate molecule that forms long chains and makes up part of chitin, the substance in crustacean shells.

The chitosan in a peacock mantis' claw, which lies just beneath the impact zone, is stacked at different orientations, like a ream of paper where every sheet has been angled slightly askew. That makes it tough to crack, as any crack that does form has to change directions in order to continue through the claw.

"What nature has actually done is it's actually built things so that, yes, flaws can happen, but when they do happen they're not going to fail catastrophically," Kisailus said.

Finally, a sharp transition marks the striated region, which runs along the sides of the claw. This region acts like the tape around a boxer's knuckles, Kisailus said, compressing the claw to make cracks less likely.

Other than highlighting some cool crustacean abilities, the findings are already proving fruitful for human engineering. Kisailus and his colleagues are working on materials engineered like these natural hammers that could be used in aerospace engineering, automobiles, military body armor and even sports helmets. An initial design, only under development for six months, survived the first tests without a single bullet penetrating, despite being only 0.4 inches (1 cm) thick, Kisailus said.

"Obviously, we still need to optimize, but we have some high-quality biomimetic structures," he said.

1 in 5 moms and dads of children under 18 say they use their smartphones to sext, says Lookout Mobile Security.

Almost a year after Anthony Weiner's sexting scandal led him to?resign from office, Americans seem to be as careless about using their smartphones as the former congressman was. Nearly 1 in 5 Americans who have a smartphone say they have used it for sexting, sharing explicit photos or text messages with others, according to a new survey.

The biggest age groups for sexting are 18- to 34-year-old men (32 percent) and 35- to 44-year-old women (25 percent), says Lookout Mobile Security, which sponsored the Harris Interactive poll of 2,097 adults.

More than a quarter of adults admitted "taking or receiving explicit photos" with their smartphones, but "as expected, 18- to 34-year old smartphone owners send or receive explicit pictures and/or videos much more than their older counterparts," with 40 percent doing so, Lookout said.

Still, it's not just for the very young ? 1 in 10 people age 55 and older with smartphones said they also sexted ? or for those who aren't parents ? 30 percent of moms and dads with children under age 18 also said they have sent or received explicit photos on their phones.

When it comes to video, 11 percent of Americans said they record explicit videos on their phones, including 18 percent of dads and 5 percent of moms.

About?1 in 10 men and women said they save romantic prospects' "contact information under a code name on their smartphone."

If any of these stats make you uneasy, Lookout has made its point.

"Only 3 percent of American adults who are smartphone owners say their biggest concern about losing their phone is that their inappropriate pictures or text messages could be exposed," the company said in a release.

"This number is shockingly low when you consider that 69 percent of smartphone owners have lost their phone," and with more than 1 in 5 admitting to taking or receiving racy photos.

Among the company's suggestions (aside from using its software or that of another company's):

• Turn-off your text message pop-ups, "so people nearby don?t get a peek at any photos or texts you don?t want seen."
• "Set a passcode and make it strong. It?s the first defense for keeping prying eyes out of your personal business."
• Lookout or similar software can help you "find your missing phone or remotely lock and wipe your photos and contacts (so your private lives stay private)."

UNITED NATIONS (AP) ? U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon says U.N. monitors were shot at trying to get to the scene of the latest Syrian massacre.

The U.N. chief told the General Assembly on Thursday that the unarmed observers were initially denied access to the scene in central Hama and "were shot at with small arms" while trying to get there. He did not mention any casualties.

Ban said each day in Syria sees more "grim atrocities" and for many months it has been evident that President Bashar Assad and his government "have lost all legitimacy."

Ban said any regime that tolerates killings such as last month's massacre of more than 100 civilians in Houla and Wednesday's attack in Hama "has lost its fundamental humanity," and he condemned "this unspeakable barbarity."

NEW YORK (AP) ? The Los Angeles Dodgers say longtime manager Tom Lasorda has been hospitalized after having what the team called a "mild" heart attack.

The Dodgers said Tuesday that Lasorda was in a New York hospital. The 84-year-old Hall of Famer became ill Monday while in town to represent the club at the Major League Baseball draft.

TMZ first reported Lasorda's condition and said the plan was for him to return home Wednesday.

This slipped by us last week, but after noting last Thursday morning that a lawsuit against Baker Tilly?for $327 million was nearing its end, we found this story from late on Thursday reporting that BT had lost the suit to Aqua Finance.

Aqua Finance accused its former accounting and advising firm of negligence and breach of contract. Aqua Finance attorneys asked jurors to award up to $327 million.?Aqua Finance's attorneys argued that Baker Tilly and its partner who managed Aqua Finance's account, Kevin Prather, withheld that the Wausau company's loan losses were improperly calculated and did not meet industry standards, according to court records.?Baker Tilly's attorneys say the company's losses were because of the economy, not accounting errors.

Baker Tilly's attorneys didn't comment for the article.?

On the surface, this could be a little problematic for Baker Tilly who had a reported $238 million in revenues for 2011. If you don't have a 10-key handy, the award of $50 million is over 20% of those revenues. That's...that's not good. Back to that in minute. As for the partner in question, according to his?LinkedIn profile,?Mr. Prather is a eight year veteran of the firm and his name was all over this complaint:?

Prather announced in February 2008 that Aqua Finance's loan loss reserves were not conducted in accord with industry standards since Jan. 1, 2005, and the company's loan loss reserves must be increased by $20 million, according to a complaint filed in court. Prather later said that he discovered the problem one year earlier, but had not reported it to Aqua Finance.?Baker Tilly withdrew from its agreement to complete Aqua Finance's 2007 audit until after the company resolved its loan reserve issue.?Aqua Finance downsized from 380 employees in January 2008 to 97 employees in February 2011 as it struggled to obtain credit and lost potential customers, according to court records.?Jurors on Thursday found that Baker Tilly was negligent in waiting one year to disclose information about problems with Aqua Finance's reserves. Jurors also determined that Baker Tilly was negligent in its handling of Aqua Finance's 2007 audit and its decision to not complete it.

For good measure, the jury also found that BT was negligent for not completing the 2007 audit. The jury did not find Mr. Prather negligent.?

But back to the firm - It stands to reason that BT will appeal - that'll be expensive - and it certainly has professional liability insurance, but it's not immediately konw how much of that will cover the award or if this constitutes a long-term financial dilemma for the firm. We sent an after-hours email to Baker Tilly CEO Tim Christen asking many of these question but it was not immediately returned. We'll let you know if we hear back.?

LONDON (AP) ? More than 1,000 boats were to sail down the River Thames on Sunday in a flotilla tribute to Queen Elizabeth II's 60 years on the throne that organizers are calling the biggest pageant on the river for 350 years.

Despite cool, drizzly weather, hundreds of thousands of people are expected to line the riverbanks between Hammersmith and Tower Bridge in London, feting the British monarch whose longevity has given her the status of the nation's favorite grandmother.

The queen and members of her family will lead the river pageant aboard a flower-bedecked royal barge, accompanied by skiffs, barges, narrowboats, motor launches, row boats and sailing vessels from around the world.

"We in Britain are experts at not letting the weather spoil our fun," said Adrian Evans, pageant master for Sunday's flotilla. "The London Philharmonic Orchestra will be playing 'Singin' In The Rain' as they travel down the river, and the crowd can sing along with them."

Hundreds of people ignored the persistent rain and camped out overnight to secure prime riverside spots. Crowds swelled into the thousands Sunday, with revelers in hats, flags, leggings and rain ponchos adorned with the Union flag mixing with burger and cotton candy vendors along the 7-mile (11-kilometer) route.

"It would have been wonderful if it had been sunny like last Sunday but we have come prepared," said 57-year-old Christine Steele. "We have got blankets, brollies (umbrellas), flags and bunting. We even got our glittery Union Jack hats and wigs, and the Champagne is on ice."

The spectacle is a tribute to Britain's past ? monarchs used the river as their main highway for centuries, and naval power built the island nation's once-great empire ? as well as to its abiding love of boats and the sea.

River processions were once common in London. The last comparable royal pageant was held for King Charles II in 1662, when diarist Samuel Pepys recorded boats so numerous he could "see no water."

Sunday's flotilla will include more than three dozen "Dunkirk Little Ships," private boats that rescued thousands of British soldiers from the beaches of France after the German invasion in 1940 ? a defeat that became a major victory for wartime morale.

The four-day Diamond Jubilee celebrations also include thousands of street parties across the country on Sunday. Prince Charles and his wife Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, joined hundreds of people for a damp al fresco lunch on Piccadilly, one of London's main shopping streets.

Not everyone in Britain is celebrating. The anti-monarchist group Republic held a riverbank protest Sunday to oppose the wave of jubilee-mania.

"People are sick and tired of being told they must celebrate 60 years of one very privileged, very remote and very uninspiring head of state," said the group's chief executive, Graham Smith. "The hereditary system is offensive to all the democratic values this country has fought for in the past."

Jubiliee celebrations kicked off Saturday with a royal day at the races, as the queen watched a horse with the courtly name of Camelot win the Epsom Derby.

The 86-year-old monarch and her husband, Prince Philip, visited Epsom racecourse south of the capital for the Derby, one of the year's biggest horse-racing meetings.

The queen is a racing fan and horse breeder who has attended the Derby for decades and reads the Racing Post each day over breakfast, although unlike many of her subjects she does not gamble.

"She's incredibly knowledgeable. Her knowledge of thoroughbreds and breeding goes way back," said Anthony Cane, chairman of Epsom Downs Racecourse.

On Monday the queen will attend a pop concert in front of Buckingham Palace featuring Elton John and Paul McCartney.

Jubilee events end Tuesday with a religious service at St. Paul's Cathedral, a carriage procession through the streets of London and the queen's appearance with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren on the palace balcony.

The queen took the throne in 1952 on the death of her father, King George VI, and most Britons have known no other monarch.

Prime Minister David Cameron ? the 12th British leader of the queen's reign ? paid tribute to the monarch's "extraordinary level of physical energy, mental energy, and above all devotion to her people, to the institutions of this country, to the way our democracy works."

In a jubilee gift from Britain's politicians, lawmakers from the three main parties have backed a motion calling for the tower housing Big Ben ? the beloved London bell that chimes the quarter hour ? to be renamed the Elizabeth Tower in the queen's honor. It's currently called the Clock Tower.

While many Britons used the long weekend to relax ? and an estimated 2 million left the country on vacation ? writers and religious leaders used the occasion to reflect on how Britain has changed over the queen's reign, from a war-scarred imperial power to a middle-sized power with oversized cultural clout.

Archbishop of Canterbury Rowan Williams, spiritual head of the Anglican Church, expressed a widely held view when he said Britain had been lucky to have Elizabeth as monarch throughout a period of rapid change.

"It seems to me that what her importance has been for most people in this country has been as a sign of stability, a sign of some kind of security," Williams said in a jubilee video message.

The Eisenhower Fellowships has a compelling slogan: Leaders bettering the world around them. Each year this highly selective fellowship program brings approximately 20 high-achieving, mid-career professionals?from 47 different countries to the U.S., and likewise sends up to 10 American Fellows abroad, for an intensive, individually designed program in the Fellow?s professional field.?During the fellowship travel period, they challenge the Fellows to identify tangible, concrete outcomes that they will undertake upon their return home.?Bernardine Vester was named New Zealand?s 2002 Eisenhower Fellow, making her one of only seven New Zealanders?in history to receive an Eisenhower Fellowship since the program was founded in 1953. We sat down to ask her three questions about her experience.

1.???? Why did you decide to apply for the Eisenhower Fellowship and what program did you propose??

I had met an American Eisenhower Fellow who came to New Zealand in 2001. I was quite excited to discover that there was another model for what I was trying to do in my community for education. I followed up my meeting with him by looking at the role of ?intermediary? organizations in education on the web. I understood then that there was a whole new world of options that I had yet to explore.

The program I proposed was to look at the way intermediary organizations developed family learning and engagement in education, community learning to address the digital divide, and to look at initiatives that enhanced the public and business relationship with schools.

2.???? What do you think made your application stand out?

I think it stood out for three reasons. The first was that I was working on ?new ideas? that had not been well explored in New Zealand, and I was in ?development mode?.?The second was that my CV demonstrated leadership experience. The fellowship is conceived as leadership development, with the expectation that learning would be applied when I returned to New Zealand.?Thirdly, I think it helped that my referees were themselves recognized as strong leaders in their fields, and their endorsement was valued.

3.???? What career tips would you give to this year?s graduates who aspire to be an Eisenhower Fellow?

Get Involved. Understand your political and social environments, and actively engage in networks that shape them. Join political groups or the professional associations that shape your career.?The Eisenhower Fellowship is for mid-career leaders from the business, not-for-profit, or government fields. Graduates who aspire to be Eisenhower Fellows should set out to grow their leadership skills.

The Eisenhower Fellowship is not an academic ?research? opportunity, but an experience for leadership growth. The fellowships have been in place for nearly sixty years, and Fellows become part of a powerful international network. Fellows are expected to return to their countries with a commitment to making a difference ? that is, shaping their economy or society through actions that deliver ?consequential outcomes?. So your CV has to show that you are capable of delivering on that.

US Cellular reduces prepaid plan prices, increases costs for new smartphone owners

US Cellular has shuffled around its prepaid plans once again, and unfortunately, it's a bit of a mixed bag for those without a contract. As it stands, customers may choose between three plans that range between $35 and $65 per month. Unfortunately for smartphone users, the most expensive plan is now a requirement, which really stinks. The $65 plan (which used to cost $70), brings unlimited voice and messaging, along with 2GB of data usage. The mid-tier plan has seen a similar reduction from $60 to $50, and now brings unlimited voice, messaging and 1GB of data usage. Unfortunately, it only applies to feature phones, even for those who tend to use WiFi on their smartphones. Meanwhile, the entry level plan now stands at $35, and it'll be useful for those who keep their phone turned off most of the time: it includes 400 voice minutes, along with a 400 / 400 allotment for text and picture messages. If it's any solace for US Cellular's current prepaid customers with smartphones, just know that you may keep your current plan, as you aren't required to switch to the new tier.
